(CHICAGO)(December 31, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference Thursday, December 31st to accuse another senate candidate of corrupting and undermining the “Tea Party” movement in Illinois.
“It didn’t take long for Illinois politicians to corrupt so-called ‘Tea Party’ leaders,” Martin charges. “Patrick Hughes and others have merely moved their ‘pay-to-play’ gimmicks into the unsophisticated arena of ‘Tea Party” committees. It appears to me that there are wholesale violations of federal election laws being committed by Hughes and his coconspirators. Of course, in Illinois politics breaking the law is routine.

That’s not the half of it.
“The Will County/Joliet/Homer Tea Party movement is spending thousands of dollars to oppose federal candidates without adequate compliance with federal election law. Hughes was caught red-handed in election law violations in November. He is a habitual offender.
“Hughes’ supporters are falsely claiming they are conducting a 'Stop Mark Kirk Rally.’ Is fraud any more acceptable when it is conducted by self-styled amateurs? No one seriously suggests that Hughes can even stop at a stop sign, let alone stop Kirk. The entire event he is promoting is a complete scam. We are considering whether to deploy pickets to warn people of Hughes' machinations. This is the same Hughes who falsely claimed Mike Ditka was serving on his 'Finance Committee,' and who said he had hundreds of thousands of dollars of ‘commitments’ that soon disappeared.
“Now the sponsors of the ‘country club’ event are trying to rope Fox News into covering this illegal assembly.
“The back story is interesting. When I attended a forum of this group in December, other candidates told me Hughes had ‘bought the support of these people,’ and that the questions being asked in the supposedly impartial forum were nothing more than sham questions previously orchestrated by Hughes. That turned out to be the case. In other words, the Tea Party promoters were conducting a completely fraudulent and fixed-in-advance event. That is no way to develop and encourage public integrity.
“The Tea Party movement was supposed to encourage independent citizen participation, and not fall under the domination or control of particular candidates. In Illinois, the opposite has happened. Hughes has claimed ‘endorsements’ from mysterious ‘Tea Party’ groups whose existence is impossible to verify. They apparently meet in secret.
“Hughes is not the only offender. A Kane County group mysteriously appeared out of nowhere. I attended a Tea Party event in Kane County, and a handful of people were there. Now they mysteriously claim ‘300 precinct committeemen,’ which is a suspiciously large number, are active. Again, this Tea Party operation met in secret and without any public notice. An attempt to Google the group produced nothing.
“On and on it goes. The following are obvious.
“First, the Tea Parties are apparently used to collect names and e-mail addresses, and this information is then bartered by small control groups for their own political benefit. Second, in my opinion, a group that is spending thousands of dollars to oppose Kirk has to file detailed reports with the federal government.
“Third the national Tea Party movement has been accused of collecting money that is then largely directed to fund raising operators. In other words, the movement has become identical to many similar suspicious charities that have been shut down by state authorities for acting as virtual conduits of professional fund raising operators.
“I obviously can’t speak to what I happening in other states. But in Illinois the Tea Party movement has fallen under the control of small groups of insiders that are vulnerable to special influence pressures and self-interested decision-making.
“One of the things I am very fastidious about in my campaign is transparency. We do nothing anonymously. Everything has my name on it or it does not go out the door. We do not do deals in secret or in private. We do not engage in pay-to-play. My campaign is a genuine grass roots citizens' movement with volunteer supporters across the state. We don’t pay for endorsements. Obviously, my standards are much higher than Hughes or the sleazy ‘consultants’ who have guided his campaign into the ditch.
"The good news is that even though Hughes has corrupted Tea Parties and corrupted the campaign process, his campaign has died on the vine. The Republican senate primary has become a two-man race between me and Mark Kirk. Hughes’ dirty tricks and hundreds of thousands of dollars of personal spending produced nothing but embarrassment, corruption and ineffective results.
“Senator Jim DeMint has encouraged this coarsening and corruption of Tea Parties in Illinois by encouraging Hughes to buy and bribe his way to political support. DeMint has not helped conservatives in Illinois. The DeMint model is a failure in our state. Not only is Hughes not ‘going anywhere,’ his campaign activity is going backwards.
“We are offering a second ‘welcome period’ to Hughes supporters to join the most dynamic conservative making in the entire United States: Andy Martin for U. S. Senator,” Martin says.

Dear Senator DeMint:
On October 16th I sent you a letter outlining the respective qualifications of Patrick Hughes and myself. A week later you issued an incomplete and misleading newsletter (November 21, 2009) claiming no one but Hughes had asked for your support.
One of the problems with Beltway “conservatives” is that they act very “liberal” with the truth. If you are going to try to rig an endorsement, please don’t try to mislead your nationwide supporters with half-truths and incomplete information.
First, since you have not responded to my letter, you are apparently not meeting with other candidates. How can you make an informed, intelligent decision without knowing all of the options?
Second, in your “newsletter” you state Hughes’ “issues” as though the man has discovered something. All of the Republican Party primary candidates with the exception of Mark Kirk support the same issues (actually, even Kirk belatedly claims to support them). Hughes’ “issues” are nothing more than a list of talking points that he recites as a parrot. If everyone supports the same issues, “issues” are not a basis to highlight one candidate over another.
Mr. Hughes has a serious problem with the truth. He lied about his support by Mike Ditka, he lied about his financial “commitments,” he lied about his record as an attorney and he has sought to proceed by surreptitiously filing challenges against other candidates. Mr. Kirk is a liar. But why would you back another liar to oppose him? Why not back the truth?
Hughes claims to be a “real estate developer.” The only major project identified with him never put a shovel in the ground and triggered litigation. He claimed to act as a “general counsel” for a de facto bankrupt real estate firm at a time when he had voluntarily suspended his law license. Are these the kinds of fraudulent acts and issues you want to endorse in a primary?
Hughes may have remodeled a few kitchens and baths, and sold “fixer-uppers” at a profit. That does not make him a “real estate developer.” Have you actually reviewed and evaluated a project list of Hughes’ developments? Of course not. That list doesn’t exist.
Mr. Hughes never voted in a Republican primary before 2008. He has issued responses that argue he has voted copiously, but no one has ever seen any backup for his claims. Have you? If he can’t document his voting record for local Republicans, why would you support him?
Hughes is a forty year-old man with a blank slate when it comes to public involvement. He claims that earlier this year he had a vision he should be a senator, paid a few thousand dollars to set up an anti-tax committee, and overnight became a national figure. I don’t think so. Most candidates who have no public and no political experience turn out to be disasters. There may be exceptions to the rule, but the rule is that “no public experience, no political experience,” equals no experience for statewide office. Hughes is no exception.
Oh, I forgot to mention: Hughes has issued bogus polls. He wins his own polls, naturally. But Hughes leaves my name out of his polls. I wonder why? Maybe because both Kirk and Hughes are afraid to list my name in their polls. I beat both of them. Is your PAC staff so gullible that they believe bogus polls?
The Illinois primary is the first election of the 2010 cycle. If you back a loser in that race your “brand” is going to be both tarnished and embarrassed. Don’t get too full of yourself.
Have you asked Hughes if he has a media plan? (My own campaign announced last Saturday that this week we are beginning media production.)
I have over forty years of political experience, so please allow me to give you some advice. Hughes is a loser. He is being promoted by someone (D. Paul Caprio) who uses politics to plunder the process for his own financial gain. So be careful. I assume Hughes got to you through Tom Coburn, who in turn is linked to Caprio. Coburn needs to have his head examined for hanging around a sleaze ball like Caprio.
Ironically, one of Hughes major supporters, Jack Roeser, made it a condition of his support that Caprio be removed from the Hughes campaign. Caprio still slithers around, but he has no official role in deference to Roeser’s demand. Call and ask Jack Roeser what he thinks of Caprio & Co. It might be an eye-opener.
ABC Channel 7 is scheduling a candidates’ debate. I suggest you hold up support for any candidate until you see them perform on the Channel 7 debate early in January. If after seeing him go up against Kirk and me, you still like Hughes, be my guest. Have at it and support him. My guess is you will not be happy with Hughes’ performance and will be glad you took my advice.
The American people are enraged and outraged that Barack Obama sits in the White House. I am the only candidate with a record of standing up to Obama. People want someone in office they can trust to fight the Obama agenda. With no experience and no record of standing up for anything but his own self-interest, only a fool would take Pat Hughes seriously. What does that say about your staff?
I don’t like Mark Kirk’s record and believe he can and should be defeated. But you are backing a dead horse if you are trying to send a rookie like Hughes up against pros like Kirk or me. Be real.

Pat Hughes’ “sixty days of disaster” as a Senate candidate

Pat Hughes launches a disastrous U. S. Senate campaign, and ends up pitting conservative against conservative
How can Hughes run a statewide campaign on forty thousand dollars?
Andy Martin calls Hughes the “Chumbolone Candidate of the Century,” offers a $25 prize to anyone who can suggest a worse campaign than Hughes’
(CHICAGO)(October 20, 2009) It hardly seems believable but Patrick Hughes launched his “chumbolone campaign” for the U. S. Senate only sixty (60) days ago in Springfield on August 20th.
Since then, Hughes has careened from one calamity to another:
1. Hughes has avoided voting in elections most of his life, and only voted Republican for the first time in 2008. When challenged about these gaps, Hughes said he was “too busy” to vote. If Hughes only discovered he was a Republican in 2008, what did he think he was before 2008? Inquiring minds want to know.
2. Hughes hired conservative profiteer D. Paul Caprio to launch his senate campaign. By October 1st, Caprio had been thrown under the bus. Why did Hughes dump Caprio? Caprio’s claim that he left after Hughes’ campaign was “up and running” is a face-saving joke.
3. Hughes says he is an outstanding attorney. Andy Martin disclosed that Hughes had placed himself on “inactive” status with the Illinois Supreme Court. Hughes violated Illinois Supreme Court Rules by holding himself out as a practicing attorney. Hughes was forced to pay past due fees and renew his active status. Jon Zahm smeared Andy for telling the truth.
4. Hughes claimed he is a “real estate developer.” His major real estate development failed to put a shovel in the ground and was sued for non-performance. Now that’s a development!
5. Nine of Hughes’ supporters issued a letter to Republican county chairmen saying they supported Hughes, but failed to disclose some of the signers of the letter were on Hughes’ payroll. By mid-October, Hughes’ original nine signers have shrunk to six for a new letter on October 16th (see below).
6. On August 20th Hughes said he has $400,000 in financial “commitments.” By September 30th, Hughes’ “commitments” have shrunk to $130,000. What happened to the other $270,000 in commitments? Hughes was forced to loan his personal funds to his campaign to make up for the missing “commitments.”
7. Hughes calls himself a wealthy developer and investor, but came out against extending unemployment benefits to Illinois citizens who are facing the brunt of a brutal recession. Hughes’ remarks were the modern equivalent of “let them eat cake.” Who advised Hughes to take this stand? Caprio? Wealthy developer-in-a-recession anyone?
8. On October 16th Hughes “adviser” Caprio and five other individuals (down from nine in August) demanded that Eric Wallace and John Arrington withdraw as senate candidates. Caprio & Co. claimed that Wallace and Arrington previously agreed to do so. Both Wallace and Arrington deny any such “agreement to withdraw” exists. Wallace and Arrington are the Illinois GOP’s only statewide African-American candidates.
9. Hughes claimed he had been “endorsed” by NFL legend Mike Ditka. Hughes also claimed Ditka agreed to serve on Hughes’ “finance committee.” (The “finance committee” with the missing $270,000?) Andy Martin investigated and disclosed that Hughes lied. There was no "Ditka endorsement." Ditka issued statements denying he ever endorsed Hughes and denying he ever agreed to serve on Hughes' “finance committee.” In retaliation, Hughes campaign manager Charlie Johnston called Ditka a liar.
10. Hughes disclosed he launched his statewide senate campaign by spending only $40,000 in two months. An independent (non-Martin) web posting says:
“Those in the know say the Hughes candidacy is self-destructing. Funds are scarce. No organization. Operatives have quit. He has no damage control on the Ditka scandal.” (Source: IllinoisReview.com, October 19th)
11. October 19th D. Paul Caprio (him again) launched a “defense” of his role in the Hughes campaign, and triggered a new round of recriminations and counterattacks.
Where is Hughes in all of this chaos? Good question. Maybe hiding. And he wants to be a U. S. Senator?
Pat Hughes’ “sixty days of disaster.” What’s next? Stay tuned.

2. Hughes hired conservative profiteer D. Paul Caprio to launch his senate campaign. By October 1st, Caprio had been thrown under the bus. Why did Hughes dump Caprio? Caprio’s claim that he left after Hughes’ campaign was “up and running” is a face-saving joke.
3. Hughes says he is an outstanding attorney. Andy Martin disclosed that Hughes had placed himself on “inactive” status with the Illinois Supreme Court. Hughes violated Illinois Supreme Court Rules by holding himself out as a practicing attorney. Hughes was forced to pay past due fees and renew his active status. Jon Zahm smeared Andy for telling the truth.
4. Hughes claimed he is a “real estate developer.” His major real estate development failed to put a shovel in the ground and was sued for non-performance. Now that’s a development!
5. Nine of Hughes’ supporters issued a letter to Republican county chairmen saying they supported Hughes, but failed to disclose some of the signers of the letter were on Hughes’ payroll. By mid-October, Hughes’ original nine signers have shrunk to six for a new letter on October 16th (see below).
6. On August 20th Hughes said he has $400,000 in financial “commitments.” By September 30th, Hughes’ “commitments” have shrunk to $130,000. What happened to the other $270,000 in commitments? Hughes was forced to loan his personal funds to his campaign to make up for the missing “commitments.”
7. Hughes calls himself a wealthy developer and investor, but came out against extending unemployment benefits to Illinois citizens who are facing the brunt of a brutal recession. Hughes’ remarks were the modern equivalent of “let them eat cake.” Who advised Hughes to take this stand? Caprio? Wealthy developer-in-a-recession anyone?
8. On October 16th Hughes “adviser” Caprio and five other individuals (down from nine in August) demanded that Eric Wallace and John Arrington withdraw as senate candidates. Caprio & Co. claimed that Wallace and Arrington previously agreed to do so. Both Wallace and Arrington deny any such “agreement to withdraw” exists. Wallace and Arrington are the Illinois GOP’s only statewide African-American candidates.
9. Hughes claimed he had been “endorsed” by NFL legend Mike Ditka. Hughes also claimed Ditka agreed to serve on Hughes’ “finance committee.” (The “finance committee” with the missing $270,000?) Andy Martin investigated and disclosed that Hughes lied. There was no "Ditka endorsement." Ditka issued statements denying he ever endorsed Hughes and denying he ever agreed to serve on Hughes' “finance committee.” In retaliation, Hughes campaign manager Charlie Johnston called Ditka a liar.
10. Hughes disclosed he launched his statewide senate campaign by spending only $40,000 in two months. An independent (non-Martin) web posting says:
“Those in the know say the Hughes candidacy is self-destructing. Funds are scarce. No organization. Operatives have quit. He has no damage control on the Ditka scandal.” (Source: IllinoisReview.com, October 19th)
11. October 19th D. Paul Caprio (him again) launched a “defense” of his role in the Hughes campaign, and triggered a new round of recriminations and counterattacks.
Where is Hughes in all of this chaos? Good question. Maybe hiding. And he wants to be a U. S. Senator?

“As seldom as I quote Rick Pearson,” Martin says, “Pearson did report correctly that Patrick Hughes told Republican leaders on August 20th that Hughes had $400,000 in ‘commitments’ to his campaign. I was there and I personally heard Hughes make his claim. Pearson also heard Hughes.”

“Hughes is a lawyer, not a layman,” Martin charges, “and is aware of the need for precise speech.
“I strongly support the right of every person to be a candidate for office. I have never asked anyone, and will never ask anyone, to withdraw merely because they are a candidate. But when a candidate lies to the voters, he forfeits the right to run. Hughes appears to have lied to the Republican Party about the extent of his financial support.
“Of course, maybe Hughes ‘adviser’ D. Paul Caprio lied to Hughes, in which case Hughes is a ‘chumbolone’ candidate. He is a lawyer/candidate who is easily fooled by hucksters such as Caprio.
“Hughes is now attempting ‘damage control’ by admitting his $400,000 in commitments’ has shrunk to $125,000 in actual cash contributions (the rest of Hughes’ ‘support’ is his personal loan). The discrepancy between $400,000 and $125,000 is so large that it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Hughes lied, or that his candidacy has subsequently imploded.

“Hughes has become an embarrassment-a-day candidate with his racist attacks on other candidates; he is now lying about financial ‘commitments’ that have disappeared. If Hughes had come in only a few dollars short, no one would hold him to account. But there is a vast difference between ‘commitments’ of $400,000 and receipts of $125,000.
“How much of this embarrassment can his supporters take before they admit they were duped by wheeler-dealer D. Paul Caprio into supporting pig-in-a-poke Hughes?” Martin will demand. “I repeat what I said previously. Hughes is a growing embarrassment to the Republican Party.
