Is Pat Hughes “too busy” again?
(CHICAGO)(October 27, 2009) Pat Hughes was “too busy” to vote for most of his adult life. He was “too busy” to declare himself a Republican until 2008. And Monday, October 26th “Too Busy Hughes” was apparently “too busy” to file his nominating petitions for United States Senator.
The “Smoke Filled Room Nine” “Christian leaders” who endorsed Hughes in August, and who had shrunk to 'six' individuals by mid-October, were dumfounded to learn their candidate “missing in action” at the State Board of Elections.
“We are promising a fair and impartial investigation,” Andy Martin pledged tongue-in-cheek. “We will find Pat Hughes and we will rescue him from whatever is holding him back from filing his petitions. Who knows what evil has befallen Hughes?
“Was Hughes discouraged by the lack of financial support for his campaign, and the ‘disappearance’ of promised contributions? Was he discouraged by the on-again, off-again ‘Ditkagate’ controversy that left is reputation in tatters? Was it the chaos within his own campaign? Did Mark Kirk bribe Hughes to withdraw, with Kirk’s mountain of ‘dirty dollars’ from lobbyists and special interests? Where is Hughes?
“I was outside the Board of Elections at 4:45 A.M. Monday. Other statewide candidates were already in line (or else had ‘sitters’ holding down a place for them). But there was no sign of Hughes.
“If Hughes does not surface soon, my campaign is prepared to offer a reward to ascertain his whereabouts. Unless, of course, Hughes is ‘too busy’ and does not want to be disturbed by the messy process of voting and running for office,” Martin noted. “If ‘Too Busy Hughes’ is alive, we will find him.”

(CHICAGO)(October 24, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference Saturday, October 24th to disclose that he has asked NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to open an investigation into whether NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka is being blackmailed, or whether Ditka is in failing health and unable to remember recent events.
“We have now relabeled this scandal at ‘Ditkagate,’” Martin says. “We are making new plans for picketing at Ditka’s. I went to Ditka’s recently, under cover. Contrary to what his publicist claims, I saw very few African-American customers. People need to know that for whatever reason or explanation, Ditka is linking himself to someone who wants to throw African-Americans off the bus.”

Request for investigation of links between
Mike Ditka and “supremacist” candidate Pat Hughes
Dear Commissioner Goodell:
I am writing to suggest and respectfully request that you open an independent investigation into the relationship between NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka and “supremacist” candidate Patrick Hughes in Illinois.
During the month of October, the relationship between Ditka and Hughes has become increasingly bizarre, all while Hughes has continued to attack African-American candidates and demonstrate the condescending attitudes of a supremacist.
Originally, Hughes claimed that Ditka endorsed him and agreed to serve on Hughes’ finance committee.
Then Ditka, both through his attorney Steve Mandell and also his publicist Ken Valdiserri, denied any agreement for either an endorsement or a finance committee slot.
While Mr. Hughes and I are political opponents, I want to assure you I am only concerned with ascertaining the facts and the truth. Someone is lying through their teeth.
And someone may be trying to blackmail Mike Ditka into endorsing a candidate, raising the possibility of a criminal conspiracy to extort the Hughes endorsement from Mr. Ditka.
There is also a serious possibility that Mike is suffering from old football injuries, and the current kerfuffle may be a warning sign of confusion on his part.
In a statement earlier this week, Hughes again claimed that Ditka endorsed him. Hughes claimed the two men spent “45 minutes” together:

Common sense tells you that if you spent 45 minutes alone with someone, or in a closed room with your wife and attorney, you would vividly remember that fact a couple of weeks later. But Ditka’s denials on October 15th showed no awareness of the time he allegedly spent with Hughes. Did Hughes and Ditka actually spend this time together? Is Ditka aware of what Hughes claims? Is the joint statement on October 22nd a cover-up? The truth remains to be ascertained.
I don’t doubt that if a celebrity such as Ditka brushed shoulders with someone in a receiving line, he might not remember the encounter weeks later. But spending 45 minutes alone with someone, and then having no recollection, is not believable. Again, something is very suspicious.
Hughes also claims that Ditka agreed to serve on his finance committee, a claim Ditka flatly and unequivocally denies, and has always denied. Again, what are the facts? Where lies the truth?
Mr. Valdiserri assured me on the 15th that (i) Ditka had not endorsed Hughes and (ii) that Valdiserri had communicated that fact to the media. Valdiserri apparently lied.
This week, Ditka again used Valdiserri and Ditka’s attorney to deny any endorsement. Then, suddenly, Ditka completely reversed himself and said he was endorsing, but denying any finance committee role. Ditka also refuses to respond to legitimate media inquires about the encounter with Hughes.
I am sure you will appreciate that all of this is very suspicious behavior. If Ditka suffers from memory problems, and has no recollection of a 45 minute meeting, then any endorsement under any conditions may be suspect, even the “endorsement” on October 22nd.
Ditka is dodging the media; that raises more suspicions. Likewise, if Ditka did not endorse on the 15th, what made him reverse himself on the 22nd?
Someone posted a comment on one blog suggesting Ditka may have an alcohol problem. If so, he needs treatment.
If Ditka’s mental confusion is the result of a long-term concussion injury, again, “attention must be paid.”
What makes all of these concerns so critical is that Ditka may have erred in what he said at the beginning of the month, but by October 22nd he was certainly under no doubt that he was endorsing a supremacist candidate who had asked African-Americans to withdraw as U. S. Senate candidates and who apparently sent a saboteur to a political breakfast to harass and heckle an African-American senate candidate who had beaten Hughes in a recent poll.
There appear to be other dirty tricks which we are investigating.
A few days ago you questioned whether Rush Limbaugh should be allowed to participate in the NFL. Ditka's transgressions are far more serious than anything Limbaugh has ever done. The Ditka case is even more serious, because someone is apparently leading Mike astray and into a political thicket of supremacists and extremists. Asking the only two African-American candidates to withdraw as candidates is not a laughing matter.
Mr. Hughes, thanks to me, is once again an active attorney (he had taken “inactive” status). Hughes has made accusations of fraud against Mike Ditka’s attorney, by claiming that Ditka’s attorney was present when Hughes was “endorsed.” A complaint to the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission is being prepared. I have a lifetime of commitment to civil rights and I will not let lies substitute for facts. On the other hand, if Mr. Ditka is being manipulated, and has difficulty making decisions for himself, or remembering them, then NFL fans ought to be aware of his health problems. Mike needs care.
In closing, I urge you to initiate a search for the truth and conduct a fair and impartial investigation of the facts. Clearly, Mr. Ditka’s lawyer and publicist bear some responsibility for the confusion. But as I reflect on Mike’s alleged 45 minute meeting with someone, which he had apparently forgotten a couple of weeks later, I am concerned that there may be a clinical problem. You should also be concerned.

Originally, Hughes claimed that Ditka endorsed him and agreed to serve on Hughes’ finance committee.
Then Ditka, both through his attorney Steve Mandell and also his publicist Ken Valdiserri, denied any agreement for either an endorsement or a finance committee slot.
While Mr. Hughes and I are political opponents, I want to assure you I am only concerned with ascertaining the facts and the truth. Someone is lying through their teeth.
And someone may be trying to blackmail Mike Ditka into endorsing a candidate, raising the possibility of a criminal conspiracy to extort the Hughes endorsement from Mr. Ditka.
There is also a serious possibility that Mike is suffering from old football injuries, and the current kerfuffle may be a warning sign of confusion on his part.
In a statement earlier this week, Hughes again claimed that Ditka endorsed him. Hughes claimed the two men spent “45 minutes” together:

Common sense tells you that if you spent 45 minutes alone with someone, or in a closed room with your wife and attorney, you would vividly remember that fact a couple of weeks later. But Ditka’s denials on October 15th showed no awareness of the time he allegedly spent with Hughes. Did Hughes and Ditka actually spend this time together? Is Ditka aware of what Hughes claims? Is the joint statement on October 22nd a cover-up? The truth remains to be ascertained.
I don’t doubt that if a celebrity such as Ditka brushed shoulders with someone in a receiving line, he might not remember the encounter weeks later. But spending 45 minutes alone with someone, and then having no recollection, is not believable. Again, something is very suspicious.
Hughes also claims that Ditka agreed to serve on his finance committee, a claim Ditka flatly and unequivocally denies, and has always denied. Again, what are the facts? Where lies the truth?
Mr. Valdiserri assured me on the 15th that (i) Ditka had not endorsed Hughes and (ii) that Valdiserri had communicated that fact to the media. Valdiserri apparently lied.
This week, Ditka again used Valdiserri and Ditka’s attorney to deny any endorsement. Then, suddenly, Ditka completely reversed himself and said he was endorsing, but denying any finance committee role. Ditka also refuses to respond to legitimate media inquires about the encounter with Hughes.
I am sure you will appreciate that all of this is very suspicious behavior. If Ditka suffers from memory problems, and has no recollection of a 45 minute meeting, then any endorsement under any conditions may be suspect, even the “endorsement” on October 22nd.
Ditka is dodging the media; that raises more suspicions. Likewise, if Ditka did not endorse on the 15th, what made him reverse himself on the 22nd?
Someone posted a comment on one blog suggesting Ditka may have an alcohol problem. If so, he needs treatment.
If Ditka’s mental confusion is the result of a long-term concussion injury, again, “attention must be paid.”
What makes all of these concerns so critical is that Ditka may have erred in what he said at the beginning of the month, but by October 22nd he was certainly under no doubt that he was endorsing a supremacist candidate who had asked African-Americans to withdraw as U. S. Senate candidates and who apparently sent a saboteur to a political breakfast to harass and heckle an African-American senate candidate who had beaten Hughes in a recent poll.
There appear to be other dirty tricks which we are investigating.
A few days ago you questioned whether Rush Limbaugh should be allowed to participate in the NFL. Ditka's transgressions are far more serious than anything Limbaugh has ever done. The Ditka case is even more serious, because someone is apparently leading Mike astray and into a political thicket of supremacists and extremists. Asking the only two African-American candidates to withdraw as candidates is not a laughing matter.
Mr. Hughes, thanks to me, is once again an active attorney (he had taken “inactive” status). Hughes has made accusations of fraud against Mike Ditka’s attorney, by claiming that Ditka’s attorney was present when Hughes was “endorsed.” A complaint to the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission is being prepared. I have a lifetime of commitment to civil rights and I will not let lies substitute for facts. On the other hand, if Mr. Ditka is being manipulated, and has difficulty making decisions for himself, or remembering them, then NFL fans ought to be aware of his health problems. Mike needs care.
In closing, I urge you to initiate a search for the truth and conduct a fair and impartial investigation of the facts. Clearly, Mr. Ditka’s lawyer and publicist bear some responsibility for the confusion. But as I reflect on Mike’s alleged 45 minute meeting with someone, which he had apparently forgotten a couple of weeks later, I am concerned that there may be a clinical problem. You should also be concerned.

(CHICAGO)(October 20, 2009) It hardly seems believable but Patrick Hughes launched his “chumbolone campaign” for the U. S. Senate only sixty (60) days ago in Springfield on August 20th.
Since then, Hughes has careened from one calamity to another:
1. Hughes has avoided voting in elections most of his life, and only voted Republican for the first time in 2008. When challenged about these gaps, Hughes said he was “too busy” to vote. If Hughes only discovered he was a Republican in 2008, what did he think he was before 2008? Inquiring minds want to know.
2. Hughes hired conservative profiteer D. Paul Caprio to launch his senate campaign. By October 1st, Caprio had been thrown under the bus. Why did Hughes dump Caprio? Caprio’s claim that he left after Hughes’ campaign was “up and running” is a face-saving joke.
3. Hughes says he is an outstanding attorney. Andy Martin disclosed that Hughes had placed himself on “inactive” status with the Illinois Supreme Court. Hughes violated Illinois Supreme Court Rules by holding himself out as a practicing attorney. Hughes was forced to pay past due fees and renew his active status. Jon Zahm smeared Andy for telling the truth.
4. Hughes claimed he is a “real estate developer.” His major real estate development failed to put a shovel in the ground and was sued for non-performance. Now that’s a development!
5. Nine of Hughes’ supporters issued a letter to Republican county chairmen saying they supported Hughes, but failed to disclose some of the signers of the letter were on Hughes’ payroll. By mid-October, Hughes’ original nine signers have shrunk to six for a new letter on October 16th (see below).
6. On August 20th Hughes said he has $400,000 in financial “commitments.” By September 30th, Hughes’ “commitments” have shrunk to $130,000. What happened to the other $270,000 in commitments? Hughes was forced to loan his personal funds to his campaign to make up for the missing “commitments.”
7. Hughes calls himself a wealthy developer and investor, but came out against extending unemployment benefits to Illinois citizens who are facing the brunt of a brutal recession. Hughes’ remarks were the modern equivalent of “let them eat cake.” Who advised Hughes to take this stand? Caprio? Wealthy developer-in-a-recession anyone?
8. On October 16th Hughes “adviser” Caprio and five other individuals (down from nine in August) demanded that Eric Wallace and John Arrington withdraw as senate candidates. Caprio & Co. claimed that Wallace and Arrington previously agreed to do so. Both Wallace and Arrington deny any such “agreement to withdraw” exists. Wallace and Arrington are the Illinois GOP’s only statewide African-American candidates.
9. Hughes claimed he had been “endorsed” by NFL legend Mike Ditka. Hughes also claimed Ditka agreed to serve on Hughes’ “finance committee.” (The “finance committee” with the missing $270,000?) Andy Martin investigated and disclosed that Hughes lied. There was no "Ditka endorsement." Ditka issued statements denying he ever endorsed Hughes and denying he ever agreed to serve on Hughes' “finance committee.” In retaliation, Hughes campaign manager Charlie Johnston called Ditka a liar.
10. Hughes disclosed he launched his statewide senate campaign by spending only $40,000 in two months. An independent (non-Martin) web posting says:
“Those in the know say the Hughes candidacy is self-destructing. Funds are scarce. No organization. Operatives have quit. He has no damage control on the Ditka scandal.” (Source: IllinoisReview.com, October 19th)
11. October 19th D. Paul Caprio (him again) launched a “defense” of his role in the Hughes campaign, and triggered a new round of recriminations and counterattacks.
Where is Hughes in all of this chaos? Good question. Maybe hiding. And he wants to be a U. S. Senator?

An anonymous Hughes operative openly called Mike Ditka a liar.
“I was not ‘in the room,’” Andy Martin stated, “but a Hughes supporter who claims he was ‘in the room’ is calling Mike Ditka a liar. The ‘L’ word is now out there, thrown at Mike Ditka by Pat Hughes’ supporters. Who are these anonymous chumbolones? As a U. S. Senate candidate, all I did was basic fact checking; I looked for the truth. But I apparently opened the door for all of Pat Hughes’ ‘creepy crawlies’ to scamper out of their caves.
“Like rival street gangs, Hughes own supporters are battling among themselves over what Mike Ditka said. The attacks on Ditka, as well as the defenses, are now increasingly being played out in the blogosphere.
“What no one disputes is that Pat Hughes is an incompetent candidate who had no business running for the U. S. Senate. Hughes managed to take a beloved Chicago institution, Mike Ditka, and drag him into the mud. The latest accusations against Ditka are sad, and reflect the growing desperation of Hughes’ diehard supporters.

Actually, He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned is correct. As much as that pains me to say it.
I personally spoke with Ditka's business manager yesterday to warn him of He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned's plan to picket Ditka's restaurant. Ditka's manager claimed that Mike did not endorse Hughes but merely agreed with two points Hughes made.
By the way, I could here Mike in the background going off about this and I can tell you that he does not like our little disliked friend "He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned".

So we are actually dealing with FACTS in these posts - several things:
Paul Caprio has not worked for Hughes or the Hughes campaign since September 30, 2009.
Paul Caprio has not been paid by Hughes or the Hughes Campaign since September 30, 2009.
At the July meeting in Willowbrook Paul Caprio was not working for or paid by Hughes or the Hughes campaign. Further, Paul Caprio's relationship and assistance with STOP-IT had ended several months prior.
Morever, Mike Ditka DID ENDORSE PATRICK HUGHES--unlike anyone on this post, I was actually in the room. Mike Ditka said (as emphatically as possible) that he supports Patrick Hughes, that he will do everything in his power to assist Pat Hughes in his bid for the US Senate, encouraged everyone in attendance to support Pat Hughes (with both money and whatever other support they were able to give). No amount of lies and conjecture can take away from what actually happened - the truth.
People should stop speculating on this blog (and elsewhere) about matters which they have no personal knowledge or credible information. Its damaging to people affected, damaging to our hope to get a true conservative into the US Senate and, in most cases, defamatory.

I would like to see unity around Hughes too.
But a big Hughes problem is Caprio doing goofy things like this. How about getting more endorsements than a piddly 6 (counting Caprio himself), before calling on others to drop out. This is just embarrassing and it's why Hughes is having a tougher time making the case that he's THE guy.
This is the problem with many self-appointed conservative "leaders." They like to spend time on this kind of wheel spinning and "look at me" self promotion, instead of doing real work that might elect some conservative candidates.

Once we see the FEC campaign financials through September 30th filings for the U.S. senate race posted on the FEC website (hopefully by the end of the weekend), we will then know who among the declared Republican candidates who should drop out.

Mike Ditka was right there at the other end of the phone when I had the discussion with his manager. Your accusation that I do not have personal knowledge or credible information which is defamatory is far from correct. I would never make a comment like I did unless it was directly quoted to me by the party involved.
Please understand, I am not saying you were not in the room with Mike Ditka when he said what he said, but don't go running off at the mouth and accuse me of telling lies. I only supplied information about what Mike and his manager said to me when I tried to warn them about an idiot that was going to picket Mike's establishment.
You can accuse them of lying if you want, but take your false accusations against me and stick them in your shady side.

Actually, He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned is correct. As much as that pains me to say it.
I personally spoke with Ditka's business manager yesterday to warn him of He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned's plan to picket Ditka's restaurant. Ditka's manager claimed that Mike did not endorse Hughes but merely agreed with two points Hughes made.
By the way, I could here Mike in the background going off about this and I can tell you that he does not like our little disliked friend "He Who Shall Not Be Mentioned".

So we are actually dealing with FACTS in these posts - several things:
Paul Caprio has not worked for Hughes or the Hughes campaign since September 30, 2009.
Paul Caprio has not been paid by Hughes or the Hughes Campaign since September 30, 2009.
At the July meeting in Willowbrook Paul Caprio was not working for or paid by Hughes or the Hughes campaign. Further, Paul Caprio's relationship and assistance with STOP-IT had ended several months prior.
Morever, Mike Ditka DID ENDORSE PATRICK HUGHES--unlike anyone on this post, I was actually in the room. Mike Ditka said (as emphatically as possible) that he supports Patrick Hughes, that he will do everything in his power to assist Pat Hughes in his bid for the US Senate, encouraged everyone in attendance to support Pat Hughes (with both money and whatever other support they were able to give). No amount of lies and conjecture can take away from what actually happened - the truth.
People should stop speculating on this blog (and elsewhere) about matters which they have no personal knowledge or credible information. Its damaging to people affected, damaging to our hope to get a true conservative into the US Senate and, in most cases, defamatory.

I would like to see unity around Hughes too.
But a big Hughes problem is Caprio doing goofy things like this. How about getting more endorsements than a piddly 6 (counting Caprio himself), before calling on others to drop out. This is just embarrassing and it's why Hughes is having a tougher time making the case that he's THE guy.
This is the problem with many self-appointed conservative "leaders." They like to spend time on this kind of wheel spinning and "look at me" self promotion, instead of doing real work that might elect some conservative candidates.

Once we see the FEC campaign financials through September 30th filings for the U.S. senate race posted on the FEC website (hopefully by the end of the weekend), we will then know who among the declared Republican candidates who should drop out.

Mike Ditka was right there at the other end of the phone when I had the discussion with his manager. Your accusation that I do not have personal knowledge or credible information which is defamatory is far from correct. I would never make a comment like I did unless it was directly quoted to me by the party involved.
Please understand, I am not saying you were not in the room with Mike Ditka when he said what he said, but don't go running off at the mouth and accuse me of telling lies. I only supplied information about what Mike and his manager said to me when I tried to warn them about an idiot that was going to picket Mike's establishment.
You can accuse them of lying if you want, but take your false accusations against me and stick them in your shady side.

Hughes operative Charlie Johnston essentially called Mike Ditka a liar.
Johnston stated: “I was there when Ditka endorsed Hughes.” Johnston then suggested that Ditka lied about his Hughes endorsement because Ditka was afraid of Andy Martin pickets at Ditka’s Restaurant in Chicago’s Gold Coast.
“I was frankly stunned by Johnston’s outburst at the candidate event in Bethalto, Illinois,” Martin said Saturday evening. “Johnston’s remarks were entirely unprovoked by me. We were in a candidate room about to be briefed on ground rules, when Johnston blurted out that ‘I was there when Ditka endorsed Hughes.’ Johnston then said it was the prospect of my pickets and boycott that got Ditka to throw Hughes under the bus. Johnston said I should ‘leave Hughes alone’ and attack Mark Kirk.
“I am the master of my own campaign,” Martin responded Saturday evening. “Pat Hughes does not tell me whom to investigate, or which lies to expose as lies. If Hughes is lying, we will expose him. We exposed Hughes for lying about his status as an attorney; we exposed Hughes for lying about his ‘financial commitments.’ We exposed Hughes for lying about ‘promises’ made to him by African-American candidates, and we have forced Mike Ditka to present his version of the facts involving a disputed endorsement, in which Ditka essentially called Hughes a liar.
“Johnston’s remarks Saturday afternoon effectively called Ditka’s publicist Ken Valdiserri’s statements Thursday lies that were motivated by fear of my pickets and boycotting. Is Mike Ditka afraid of Andy Martin? I have no information on that.
“We are now left with two utterly conflicting and irreconcilable stories. Ditka publicist Valdiserri has issued statements denying that Ditka ever endorsed Hughes as a candidate, and denying that Ditka agreed to serve on Hughes’ Finance Committee.
“Veteran Hughes operative Charlie Johnson completely contradicted the Ditka version of events in Bethalto Saturday, by stating that Johnston was personally present when Ditka endorsed Hughes. I have no idea which version of these conflicting narratives is true. Witnesses were present in the candidate briefing room to confirm Johnston’s outbursts on Saturday.
“Johnston’s claim that Ditka succumbed to my picketing and protests, well who knows what motivates any of the players in the Ditka/Hughes ‘Endorsementgate’ scandal? Hughes’ Charlie Johnston is a veteran political operative, so I assume he does have personal knowledge of the facts, and he was, as he claims, personally present when Ditka said something.
“Friday I got into a disagreement with Ditka’s publicist Ken Valdiserri. Ditka’s man said I was wrong to suggest Ditka called Hughes a ‘liar’ when Ditka’s statements on Thursday directly contradicted Hughes claims and the Associated Press reports.
“With all due respect to Ditka's publicist, when you completely discredit someone’s remarks, you are calling the other person a liar.
“Valdiserri essentially called Hughes’ statements lies, and Hughes operative Johnston responded Saturday by calling Ditka’s statements lies. Which one of these people is lying? I don't know. But Johnston and Valdiserri can’t both be telling the truth.

“All I did was perform the basic journalistic investigation that the Chicago Tribune, Associated Press and local Chicago ‘sports media’ failed to perform before printing an ‘endorsement’ that Ditka says never took place. Johnston now says Ditka is lying, and that there was an endorsement.
“Will local media pursue the conflicting narratives, or continue the cover-up of their own incompetence and embarrassment in failing to do basic fact checking before publishing the original ‘story’?
“The questions surrounding the credibility of persons Hughes chose as advisers, D. Paul Caprio and Charlie Johnston, also remains to be resolved. If Hughes can’t choose honest and competent campaign personnel, how could he staff a senate office?
“The issue of whether political wannabe Patrick Hughes repeatedly lied to the public and media, and whether he tried to inflated his political resume, is a very serious campaign question mark. The issue will not disappear until the complete and uncontradicted truth is known,” Martin said.

The embarrassment never ends where Pat Hughes is concerned. Coach Mike Ditka denies serving on Hughes' "Finance Committee," even though Hughes issued a statement claiming Ditka was on the Committee. "Maybe that's the Committee that said Hughes had $400,000 in 'commitments,' and then skedaddled," Andy Martin said.

“Who is fact checking the news?” Martin demanded. “Fact checking is journalism 101.”
“Mike Ditka’s attorney and media advisor have both strenuously denied any endorsement or support by Ditka for Patrick Hughes (see below). Yet the bogus ‘endorsement’ has been widely reported.
“Right-wing media and media poseurs such as Warner Todd Huston also have egg on their face. The IllinoisReview.com headlined an ‘endorsement’ without basic fact checking. Is it any wonder that so-called ‘conservative leaders’ are a laughingstock in Illinois?
“The Chicago Tribune called me an ‘absolutely brilliant campaigner’ for a reason: I do the basic blocking and tackling of politics. 'Coach Ditka' would understand. We ‘tackled’ the lies that Hughes and Caprio were circulating about him.
“I fact-checked Ditka’s bogus endorsement, and helped Ditka to admit the truth. There was no endorsement. It was all a pack of Caprio/Hughes lies.
“No wonder Hughes is not practicing law any more. Even lawyers couldn't trust his word. Hughes said he had $400,000 in campaign ‘commitments.’ More lies. On and on it goes.
“But what does this controversy say about so-called 'mainstream media’ that fail to do their own fact checking? Obviously, no one made so much as a phone call to Ditka. They were too lazy. They merely regurgitated a press release from a political campaign that has a history of making false claims. Chicago Media 2009. Sad.
“In my opinion, the Associated Press has been disgraced by its lack of basic professionalism. The Chicago Tribune has been embarrassed, because the Trib ticked up the AP story without any local follow-up.
“As for the right-wing ‘media,’ they are an embarrassment to themselves.
“And they think their ‘clown candidate’ is ready to tackle professional pols such as Mark Kirk? If Pat Hughes stays in the race he is going to nominate Mark Kirk. These people are insulting the Republican voters of Illinois by supporting an incompetent liar and his crooked handler D. Paul Caprio.
“The truth matters in politics. And I am respected, if occasionally disliked, because I stick to the facts. We have no need to concoct falsehoods about our opponents; they manufacture their own lies. And Chicago’s corrupt and incompetent media broadcast these lies to the world. They wonder why no one buys newspapers any more, and why both of Chicago’s papers are in bankruptcy? The bogus Ditka ‘endorsement’ story is a classic example of a Chicago media scandal.” Martin said.

CHICAGO - Chicago Bears legend Mike Ditka is backing the little-known Patrick Hughes for the Republican Senate nomination in Illinois.
In a statement released Thursday by the Hughes campaign, Ditka praises the candidate’s “mainstream values” and pledges to help any way he can.
Hughes says he is humbled to have the support of the former Bears coach and player.
Hughes is a Hinsdale real estate developer. He’s up against U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk for the Senate nomination.
Kirk has angered many conservatives by supporting “cap and trade” legislation on global warming, backing abortion rights and supporting some gun control measures.

(CHICAGO)(October 15, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin has received a statement from a publicist for Mike Ditka indicating that Ditka has not “endorsed” Hughes and that Ditka rejects Hughes’ efforts to remove African-Americans from the Republican Party’s primary ballot.
“Hughes appears to have misrepresented his purported ‘endorsement’ by Mike Ditka,” Martin noted. “Ditka says he only endorsed two of Hughes’ views, which is not support for the candidate. Hughes claims Ditka is on his Finance Committee, which Ditka appears to refute.
“Once again Pat Hughes is caught lying and exaggerating. Why is this man being supported by Christian conservatives?
“I have advised Mr. Ditka I am a Republican, not a Democrat; it is usually in 18-point type in my releases. I understand that Mike is outraged; I am also outraged at Hughes misrepresentations about a nonexistent endorsement.
“I received a very vehement phone call from an attorney for Mike Ditka, Steve Mandell (847) 274-1343 stating in no uncertain terms that Hughes’ claims of a Ditka endorsement are completely untrue. People may contact Mr. Ditka’s attorney for verification.
“But what does all of this say about D. Paul Caprio and Pat Hughes? They apparently victimized a beloved citizen of this city, Mike Ditka, as a sleazy tactic in Hughes’ senate campaign. Hughes’ behavior is disgraceful.”
Martin is seeking clarification on Ditka’s statement. Ditka’s statement follows:

In response to a claim by Democratic Senate candidate Andy Martin, who claimed this morning that Mike Ditka has endorsed his competitor Pat Hughes, , the Hall of Fame coach disputed his ‘endorsement’ of this candidate and his racially incendiary views.
“Pat spoke at the restaurant last week and presented small government and Reaganomic points of view,” said Ditka. He asked if I would endorse his candidacy and I indicated I supported his views on those two issues only”.
“I have long supported civil rights and would never support advocacy for the exclusion of African Americans, or any race, color or religion,” said Ditka. “All you need to do is come to my restaurant and see the diversity of our employees, customers and friends.
“These claims and rhetoric are obviously ‘politically motivated and for Andy Martin or anyone for that matter who thinks I would support these views is ludicrous,” concluded Ditka.

(CHICAGO)(October 15, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will begin picketing Mike Ditka’s Restaurant in Chicago today, Thursday, October 15th.
“It is very unfortunate that NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka has allegedly endorsed a Republican candidate who is anti-labor and anti-Black. How does Mike explain his bizarre behavior to his NFL colleagues?
“Last week this candidate, who claims he has been endorsed by Ditka, told African–Americans to leave the primary election ballot.
“I have a lifetime of support for civil rights, and I unhesitatingly condemn any ‘Republican’ that suggests Blacks are unwelcome in the Republican Party.
D. Paul Caprio, the henchman for this despicable candidate, is a disgrace to the Christian Conservative movement. Caprio’s demand that Blacks exit a primary election because they told him they would was based on a fraudulent ‘commitment’ that Caprio claims the candidates gave him last summer.
In reality, Caprio’s entire ‘conservative leader’ operation was a financial scam designed to personally enrich Caprio and to impoverish the credibility of the conservative Christian movement in Illinois.
“I would not be surprised to learn that Caprio’s shenanigans are being bankrolled by Mark Kirk, because it benefits Kirk for conservative Christians to be seen as hostile to African-American aspirations.
“Mike Ditka was given an opportunity to cut his ties to the racist candidate, and declined to do so. We are now moving to stage two, and picketing Ditka’s to inform Mike’s customers that their restaurant dollars are subsidizing a racist Republican candidate.
“African-Americans are welcome in the Republican Party, and they are very welcome in my campaign. We must rebuild and recharge the great civil rights coalition that was led by Republican U. S. Senator Everett Dirksen and the many honorable Republicans who supported civil rights.
“Even though the African-Americans Ditka’s candidate has attacked are nominally my opponents, I will not tolerate racist attacks against them and I am prepared to lead the charge against D. We expect to begin picketing around 7:00 P.M. The demonstrations may continue through the weekend, and thereafter.
We would also like to be able to distribute literature in the area of Ditka’s.
To avoid any confusion with local district officers on the scene, I am asking for your assistance in coordinating locations, procedures, etc. to ensure a harmonious demonstration.

CHICAGO NEWS CONFERENCE: Racist candidate lied to Republican Party leaders
Andy Martin says racist Republican Patrick Hughes lied to Party leaders on August 20th when Hughes claimed he had “commitments” of $400,000 to his campaign. The “commitments” had shrunk to $130,000 by September 30th. Hughes has failed to explain the discrepancy.

(CHICAGO)(October 10, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference today, October 10th to suggest that Hinsdale attorney Patrick Hughes withdraw as a candidate.
“As seldom as I quote Rick Pearson,” Martin says, “Pearson did report correctly that Patrick Hughes told Republican leaders on August 20th that Hughes had $400,000 in ‘commitments’ to his campaign. I was there and I personally heard Hughes make his claim. Pearson also heard Hughes.”

“Hughes is a lawyer, not a layman,” Martin charges, “and is aware of the need for precise speech.
“I strongly support the right of every person to be a candidate for office. I have never asked anyone, and will never ask anyone, to withdraw merely because they are a candidate. But when a candidate lies to the voters, he forfeits the right to run. Hughes appears to have lied to the Republican Party about the extent of his financial support.
“Of course, maybe Hughes ‘adviser’ D. Paul Caprio lied to Hughes, in which case Hughes is a ‘chumbolone’ candidate. He is a lawyer/candidate who is easily fooled by hucksters such as Caprio.
“Hughes is now attempting ‘damage control’ by admitting his $400,000 in commitments’ has shrunk to $125,000 in actual cash contributions (the rest of Hughes’ ‘support’ is his personal loan). The discrepancy between $400,000 and $125,000 is so large that it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Hughes lied, or that his candidacy has subsequently imploded.
“D. Paul Caprio’s role in the Hughes campaign is also unresolved.
“Hughes is now having to throw his own cash into the kitty to avoid even more embarrassment. How much spare cash does he have? He owes Republicans yet another explanation.
“We will shortly be contacting Mike Ditka to verify another one of Hughes’ erroneous claims, namely that Ditka is backing Hughes' ‘chumbolone’ campaign for public office. Ditka’s support appears to be another whopper.
“When a lawyer such as Hughes uses the term ‘commitment’ he knows what a commitment is. Either Hughes lied on August 20th, or his campaign support has evaporated. He owes the Jesus wing of the Republican Party a prompt and complete explanation as to what happened to the missing $275,000.
“Hughes has become an embarrassment-a-day candidate with his racist attacks on other candidates; he is now lying about financial ‘commitments’ that have disappeared. If Hughes had come in only a few dollars short, no one would hold him to account. But there is a vast difference between ‘commitments’ of $400,000 and receipts of $125,000.
“How much of this embarrassment can his supporters take before they admit they were duped by wheeler-dealer D. Paul Caprio into supporting pig-in-a-poke Hughes?” Martin will demand. “I repeat what I said previously. Hughes is a growing embarrassment to the Republican Party. He is an unmitigated disaster for the ‘Christian’ wing of the Party that says it backs him.
“We have been contacted with new ‘issues’ about Hughes, and we expect to lodge new charges against him in the next few days.
“How did Jack Roeser ever fall for this bogus candidate? Hughes is demolishing the credibility of Champion News.
“The time has long since passed when Hughes should discover he ‘needs to spend more time with my family.’”
