Andy Martin says that Patrick Hughes is continuing his pattern of deceptive behavior
Hughes admits he is “Candidate X” and transfers Martin’s “Solo” lawsuit from state court to federal court
(CHICAGO)(November 9, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin announced today that his primary opponent Pat Hughes has transferred the “Solo Family” lawsuit, originally filed in the Circuit Court of DuPage County, to federal court.
“Mr. Hughes is taking my lawsuit very seriously,” Martin noted. “He made a ‘federal case’ out of my claims that ‘Candidate X’ was breaking the law. Hughes has admitted he is ‘Candidate X.’ Amusingly, Hughes moved the lawsuit to federal court even before the sheriff could serve the Solo Family defendants. Both Solos admitted they are Hughes operatives.
“Hughes has established a pattern of deceptive and manipulative behavior. Last summer he paid D. Paul Caprio to recruit ‘pro-family leaders’ to his campaign. Caprio did not disclose he was acting as a paid agent of the Hughes campaign.
“Hughes then sent ‘consultant’ Jon Zahm out to attack me when I filed a meritorious complaint against Hughes because of his fraudulent behavior as an attorney. Zahm appeared to be acting as a paid spokesman for Hughes, though Zahm now denies that claim. Hughes was forced to admit I was legally correct. He had to pay his dues as an ‘active’ attorney or face professional discipline.
“Then Hughes falsely claimed that Mike Ditka had both ‘endorsed’ Hughes and agreed to serve on his ‘Finance Committee.’ Ditka denied both claims, although he later issued a lukewarm ‘endorsement’ of Hughes. Ditka has kept his distance from Hughes since ‘endorsing’ him. Some endorsement. Ditka flatly refused to serve on Hughes Finance Committee.
“Then Hughes demanded that the two African-American candidates withdraw from the Republican Party senate primary. Hughes claimed he had a secret deal with Arrington and Wallace for them to withdraw. Both men denied Hughes’ claim.
“Hughes then tried to use a straw man to order petitions from the State Board of Elections. When I offered Hughes the option of admitting he was ‘Candidate X’ and avoiding a lawsuit, Hughes chose to be sued. Now that he has been sued, he has been forced to make an admission that he was indeed ‘Candidate X.’ We will be deposing his ‘workers’ to find out how they paid for the petition copies.
“In addition to manifesting a continuously deceptive personality, Hughes also manifests gross incompetence as a lawyer. He was unlawfully holding himself out as a ‘General Counsel’ at a time when he had suspended his law license and gone on ‘inactive’ status. That was a serious legal violation.
“Hughes now claims he has a right to ‘copy petitions.’ I agree he has that right. What Hughes does not have a right to do is launder money to pay for petitions in a way that disguises his payment for the petitions. If Hughes can’t even comprehend the basic ethical requirements of an attorney or federal candidate, how is he going to deal with the complexity of being a U. S. Senator?” Martin asks.
“Obviously, Hughes is out of his depth, and drowning. But then Hughes was unable to cope with the complexities of voting either, until he decided to become a candidate for U. S. Senator. He voted for the first time as a Republican in 2008. What took him so long? He’s 40 years old.”

Hughes’ own claims indicate that his campaign operatives, led by veteran Charlie Johnston, have lied to Jack Roeser and other major Hughes donors about Caprio’s continuing role in the Hughes campaign.
After the Andy Martin campaign launched an All Points Bulletin, Hughes was located at another bogus candidates’ forum in Rockford, where Hughes supporters rigged the invitation list to avoid inviting Martin.
“You have to wonder at what the ‘Christian’ idea of politics is,” Martin said. ‘These people call themselves ‘Christian leaders’ but their tactics are blatantly satanic. They seem to be using more dirty tricks than the Daley Machine. ‘Too Busy Hughes’ appears to be lying to conservative powerhouse Jack Roeser and many of his other supporters.
“Charlie Johnson has unequivocally and repeatedly claimed that Paul Caprio has left the Hughes campaign, but Hughes contradicted Johnston Monday night by admitting Paul Caprio is still the driving force behind Hughes’ campaign.
“So which is it: who is lying? Charlie Johnston, who says Caprio is ‘out,’ or Hughes who claimed in Rockford that Caprio is ‘in.’
“The bottom line: Pat Hughes has done more damage to Christian conservatives and to the Republican Party in general, with his ham-handed approach, than anyone in recent memory.
“Hughes denies he is planning nominating petition attacks against African-American candidates Eric Wallace and John Arrington, but who believes anything Hughes or his campaign says any more,” Martin continued. “One of either Johnston or Hughes has been bald-faced liar about Paul Caprio’s continuing role in Hughes’ doomed campaign. Which one is lying? And why?
“Hughes can’t even get petition signatures despite his ‘Christian’ support. These ‘Christian leaders,’ including one County Chairman [John Parrott], turn out to be false prophets when it comes to putting their petitions where their mouths are. What an embarrassment. They ‘endorsed’ someone and then couldn’t produce signatures to back up their endorsement.
“I am a Christian and a conservative, and I strive to live by Christ’s principles, not make a parody of them the way Hughes and his posse are doing.
“I can only say I am glad these individuals did not invite me to their rigged forum in Rockford. Maybe these Christians should read the Bible before they stray any further into demonic politics. Or is Pat Hughes possibly a Mark Kirk sabotage agent, thrashing about trying to disorganize Kirk’s opponents? Hughes sure isn’t helping the Christian cause,” Martin concluded in announcing his Hughes “sighting.”

How can Hughes run a statewide campaign on forty thousand dollars?
Andy Martin calls Hughes the “Chumbolone Candidate of the Century,” offers a $25 prize to anyone who can suggest a worse campaign than Hughes’
(CHICAGO)(October 20, 2009) It hardly seems believable but Patrick Hughes launched his “chumbolone campaign” for the U. S. Senate only sixty (60) days ago in Springfield on August 20th.
Since then, Hughes has careened from one calamity to another:
1. Hughes has avoided voting in elections most of his life, and only voted Republican for the first time in 2008. When challenged about these gaps, Hughes said he was “too busy” to vote. If Hughes only discovered he was a Republican in 2008, what did he think he was before 2008? Inquiring minds want to know.
2. Hughes hired conservative profiteer D. Paul Caprio to launch his senate campaign. By October 1st, Caprio had been thrown under the bus. Why did Hughes dump Caprio? Caprio’s claim that he left after Hughes’ campaign was “up and running” is a face-saving joke.
3. Hughes says he is an outstanding attorney. Andy Martin disclosed that Hughes had placed himself on “inactive” status with the Illinois Supreme Court. Hughes violated Illinois Supreme Court Rules by holding himself out as a practicing attorney. Hughes was forced to pay past due fees and renew his active status. Jon Zahm smeared Andy for telling the truth.
4. Hughes claimed he is a “real estate developer.” His major real estate development failed to put a shovel in the ground and was sued for non-performance. Now that’s a development!

(CHICAGO)(October 20, 2009) It hardly seems believable but Patrick Hughes launched his “chumbolone campaign” for the U. S. Senate only sixty (60) days ago in Springfield on August 20th.
Since then, Hughes has careened from one calamity to another:
1. Hughes has avoided voting in elections most of his life, and only voted Republican for the first time in 2008. When challenged about these gaps, Hughes said he was “too busy” to vote. If Hughes only discovered he was a Republican in 2008, what did he think he was before 2008? Inquiring minds want to know.
2. Hughes hired conservative profiteer D. Paul Caprio to launch his senate campaign. By October 1st, Caprio had been thrown under the bus. Why did Hughes dump Caprio? Caprio’s claim that he left after Hughes’ campaign was “up and running” is a face-saving joke.
3. Hughes says he is an outstanding attorney. Andy Martin disclosed that Hughes had placed himself on “inactive” status with the Illinois Supreme Court. Hughes violated Illinois Supreme Court Rules by holding himself out as a practicing attorney. Hughes was forced to pay past due fees and renew his active status. Jon Zahm smeared Andy for telling the truth.
4. Hughes claimed he is a “real estate developer.” His major real estate development failed to put a shovel in the ground and was sued for non-performance. Now that’s a development!

“It is very unfortunate that NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka has allegedly endorsed a Republican candidate who is anti-labor and anti-Black. How does Mike explain his bizarre behavior to his NFL colleagues?
“Last week this candidate, who claims he has been endorsed by Ditka, told African–Americans to leave the primary election ballot.
“I have a lifetime of support for civil rights, and I unhesitatingly condemn any ‘Republican’ that suggests Blacks are unwelcome in the Republican Party.
D. Paul Caprio, the henchman for this despicable candidate, is a disgrace to the Christian Conservative movement. Caprio’s demand that Blacks exit a primary election because they told him they would was based on a fraudulent ‘commitment’ that Caprio claims the candidates gave him last summer.
In reality, Caprio’s entire ‘conservative leader’ operation was a financial scam designed to personally enrich Caprio and to impoverish the credibility of the conservative Christian movement in Illinois.
“I would not be surprised to learn that Caprio’s shenanigans are being bankrolled by Mark Kirk, because it benefits Kirk for conservative Christians to be seen as hostile to African-American aspirations.
“Mike Ditka was given an opportunity to cut his ties to the racist candidate, and declined to do so. We are now moving to stage two, and picketing Ditka’s to inform Mike’s customers that their restaurant dollars are subsidizing a racist Republican candidate.
“African-Americans are welcome in the Republican Party, and they are very welcome in my campaign. We must rebuild and recharge the great civil rights coalition that was led by Republican U. S. Senator Everett Dirksen and the many honorable Republicans who supported civil rights.
“Even though the African-Americans Ditka’s candidate has attacked are nominally my opponents, I will not tolerate racist attacks against them and I am prepared to lead the charge against D. Paul Caprio’s malignant behavior. We start picketing Ditka's at dinner tonight, Thursday night, October 15th, and continue on with weekend protests. We hope to be in place by 7:00 P.M.

“As seldom as I quote Rick Pearson,” Martin says, “Pearson did report correctly that Patrick Hughes told Republican leaders on August 20th that Hughes had $400,000 in ‘commitments’ to his campaign. I was there and I personally heard Hughes make his claim. Pearson also heard Hughes.”

“Hughes is a lawyer, not a layman,” Martin charges, “and is aware of the need for precise speech.
“I strongly support the right of every person to be a candidate for office. I have never asked anyone, and will never ask anyone, to withdraw merely because they are a candidate. But when a candidate lies to the voters, he forfeits the right to run. Hughes appears to have lied to the Republican Party about the extent of his financial support.
“Of course, maybe Hughes ‘adviser’ D. Paul Caprio lied to Hughes, in which case Hughes is a ‘chumbolone’ candidate. He is a lawyer/candidate who is easily fooled by hucksters such as Caprio.
“Hughes is now attempting ‘damage control’ by admitting his $400,000 in commitments’ has shrunk to $125,000 in actual cash contributions (the rest of Hughes’ ‘support’ is his personal loan). The discrepancy between $400,000 and $125,000 is so large that it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Hughes lied, or that his candidacy has subsequently imploded.
“D. Paul Caprio’s role in the Hughes campaign is also unresolved.
“Hughes is now having to throw his own cash into the kitty to avoid even more embarrassment. How much spare cash does he have? He owes Republicans yet another explanation.
“We will shortly be contacting Mike Ditka to verify another one of Hughes’ erroneous claims, namely that Ditka is backing Hughes' ‘chumbolone’ campaign for public office. Ditka’s support appears to be another whopper.
“When a lawyer such as Hughes uses the term ‘commitment’ he knows what a commitment is. Either Hughes lied on August 20th, or his campaign support has evaporated. He owes the Jesus wing of the Republican Party a prompt and complete explanation as to what happened to the missing $275,000.
“Hughes has become an embarrassment-a-day candidate with his racist attacks on other candidates; he is now lying about financial ‘commitments’ that have disappeared. If Hughes had come in only a few dollars short, no one would hold him to account. But there is a vast difference between ‘commitments’ of $400,000 and receipts of $125,000.
“How much of this embarrassment can his supporters take before they admit they were duped by wheeler-dealer D. Paul Caprio into supporting pig-in-a-poke Hughes?” Martin will demand. “I repeat what I said previously. Hughes is a growing embarrassment to the Republican Party. He is an unmitigated disaster for the ‘Christian’ wing of the Party that says it backs him.
“We have been contacted with new ‘issues’ about Hughes, and we expect to lodge new charges against him in the next few days.
“How did Jack Roeser ever fall for this bogus candidate? Hughes is demolishing the credibility of Champion News.
“The time has long since passed when Hughes should discover he ‘needs to spend more time with my family.’”

(CHICAGO)(October 10, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference today, October 10th to suggest that Hinsdale attorney Patrick Hughes withdraw as a candidate.
“As seldom as I quote Rick Pearson,” Martin says, “Pearson did report correctly that Patrick Hughes told Republican leaders on August 20th that Hughes had $400,000 in ‘commitments’ to his campaign. I was there and I personally heard Hughes make his claim. Pearson also heard Hughes.”

“Hughes is a lawyer, not a layman,” Martin charges, “and is aware of the need for precise speech.
“I strongly support the right of every person to be a candidate for office. I have never asked anyone, and will never ask anyone, to withdraw merely because they are a candidate. But when a candidate lies to the voters, he forfeits the right to run. Hughes appears to have lied to the Republican Party about the extent of his financial support.
“Of course, maybe Hughes ‘adviser’ D. Paul Caprio lied to Hughes, in which case Hughes is a ‘chumbolone’ candidate. He is a lawyer/candidate who is easily fooled by hucksters such as Caprio.
“Hughes is now attempting ‘damage control’ by admitting his $400,000 in commitments’ has shrunk to $125,000 in actual cash contributions (the rest of Hughes’ ‘support’ is his personal loan). The discrepancy between $400,000 and $125,000 is so large that it is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Hughes lied, or that his candidacy has subsequently imploded.
“D. Paul Caprio’s role in the Hughes campaign is also unresolved.
“Hughes is now having to throw his own cash into the kitty to avoid even more embarrassment. How much spare cash does he have? He owes Republicans yet another explanation.
“We will shortly be contacting Mike Ditka to verify another one of Hughes’ erroneous claims, namely that Ditka is backing Hughes' ‘chumbolone’ campaign for public office. Ditka’s support appears to be another whopper.
“When a lawyer such as Hughes uses the term ‘commitment’ he knows what a commitment is. Either Hughes lied on August 20th, or his campaign support has evaporated. He owes the Jesus wing of the Republican Party a prompt and complete explanation as to what happened to the missing $275,000.
“Hughes has become an embarrassment-a-day candidate with his racist attacks on other candidates; he is now lying about financial ‘commitments’ that have disappeared. If Hughes had come in only a few dollars short, no one would hold him to account. But there is a vast difference between ‘commitments’ of $400,000 and receipts of $125,000.
“How much of this embarrassment can his supporters take before they admit they were duped by wheeler-dealer D. Paul Caprio into supporting pig-in-a-poke Hughes?” Martin will demand. “I repeat what I said previously. Hughes is a growing embarrassment to the Republican Party. He is an unmitigated disaster for the ‘Christian’ wing of the Party that says it backs him.
“We have been contacted with new ‘issues’ about Hughes, and we expect to lodge new charges against him in the next few days.
“How did Jack Roeser ever fall for this bogus candidate? Hughes is demolishing the credibility of Champion News.
“The time has long since passed when Hughes should discover he ‘needs to spend more time with my family.’”

Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference today, October 8th to condemn Republican “slime balls” D. Paul Caprio and senate candidate Patrick Hughes for attacking African-American candidates in the Republican Party and seeking to remove them from the primary ballot.
“A few days ago, Hughes attacked unemployment compensation,” Martin says. “Now he demands that Black candidates withdraw from our statewide primary. Caprio and Hughes are a disgrace to Illinois Republicans. "
Martin says Caprio and Hughes are creating a “hostile environment” for Black participation in the Republican Party. Martin is a long-time supporter of civil rights and spoke of the need for Republicans to support civil rights at the Coles County Republican Dinner on October 1st.
“I call on Republican State Chairman Patrick Brady to condemn these actions by Caprio/Hughes or face a civil rights lawsuit from my campaign. I will not tolerate blatant racism in the Illinois Republican Party," Martin says.
“I have been working hard as a candidate to welcome, invite and recruit African-American participation. I find it bizarre that the so-called ‘Jesus wing’ of the Republican Party is supporting blatant racists such as Caprio and Hughes. There is no place for Ku Klux Klan tactics in the Illinois Republican Party. Either Brady shows leadership, or I will lead him into a courtroom.
“Caprio/Hughes’ demand that Black candidates withdraw from the U. S. Senate primary is racist and irrational.
“Caprio/Hughes do not owe just Blacks an apology; they must apologize to every Republican for seeking to single out African-American candidates for denial of the right to run. The ‘right to run’ is a constitutionally protected right.
“I have previously condemned efforts by so-called 'conservative' party leaders to discourage people from running for office. I welcome any and all opposition, from Mark Kirk to anyone else.
“Now I know why the ‘smoke-filled room nine’ met in secret in Bloomington in August to ‘interview’ Hughes after Caprio took $10,000 from his creepy candidate. These men met in secret to duplicate the ‘Klavern’ tactics of the Klan. Did they burn a cross before they ‘endorsed’ Hughes?
“Hughes’ major problem is that he only ‘discovered’ the Republican Party last year, voting Republican for the first time in his life in 2008. A few months later he ‘discovered’ he was qualified to be a candidate for national office. Wow. Maybe he should go back to square one and ‘discover’ our party was founded by Abraham Lincoln. Illinois blood was shed to save the union from slavery and secession.
“Sadly, Illinois voters, and especially Republican voters, are ‘discovering’ Pat Hughes is nothing more than a campaign dummy for puppeteer D. Paul Caprio. The attack on African-American candidates is only the latest example of unfitness on the part of Caprio/Hughes. Supposedly Caprio was removed from the Hughes campaign. Obviously, that claim was false.
“As for the so-called ‘Christian’ groups that support Caprio/Hughes, I can only say ‘Jesus wept’ when he realized these craven men were attacking African-American candidates.
“I spoke with businessman Jack Roeser last week. I respect many of his views. I do not think Roeser is a racist. But if Roeser allows his ‘Champion News’ to continue to ‘champion’ Hughes & Co., Roeser will be tainted by association with the Ku Klux Klan candidate for U. S. Senator, Patrick Hughes.
“Jack, say it isn’t so.” Martin will state.

(CHICAGO)(October 7, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin announced today that his campaign has learned that political huckster Paul Caprio has been dumped by the Pat Hughes senate campaign.
“I have confirmed from two independent sources that Caprio is out,” Martin stated in announcing the development. “Caprio, the man whom Hughes initially paid to promote Hughes’ candidacy, has now been thrown under the bus. So much for loyalty. So much for Hughes’ judgment and wisdom as a candidate. So much for the ‘conservative leaders’ that met in secret and schemed to mislead Illinois Republicans about Caprio’s conflicts of interest in pretending to be ‘evaluating’ Hughes while Caprio was on Hughes’ payroll.
“What is clear that the loss of Caprio will throw Hughes' comic book campaign into disarray.
“Hughes may effectively be out of the race next week,” Martin continued.
“I was in Springfield on August 20th when Hughes unequivocally stated he had ‘commitments’ for $400,000 for his campaign. Hughes did not say he was self-funding. Hughes suggested contributors had made ‘commitments’ to him. Obviously, one does not make ‘commitments’ to yourself. As a lawyer, Hughes surely knows that. Well, we’ll see if the $400,000 in ‘commitments’ was fulfilled.
“If the ‘commitments’ fail to appear in the financial reports, Hughes will effectively out of the race. He will have been irreparably embarrassed by his own flatulent promises and unfulfilled predictions.
“My campaign is working aggressively from Cairo to Rockford, and from the Quad Cities to downtown Chicago, to fight corruption and revive the Republican Party for the real battle against Mark Kirk.
“I am the Downstate candidate who seeks to defeat Kirk. Kirk is the ‘Combine’ candidate of wealthy pro-Daley Machine Republican businessmen.
“I wish to be clear that I bear Pat Hughes no ill will. In our only personal encounter, he was cordial and I reciprocated the cordiality.
“But, unfortunately for him, Hughes is simply not ready for big time politics. His poor judgment and impaired leadership have given the pro-family Christian right a black eye. His claim that for decades he was ‘too busy’ to participate in democracy by voting, makes a sham of his sudden desire to serve at the highest levels of American government.

(CHICAGO)(October 6, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference Tuesday, October 6th to unveil his campaign’s new website and to suggest that former Governor Mike Huckabee will face a lawsuit because of his participation in an “illegal” political event in Chicago Tuesday night.
“I am delighted to unveil our new campaign website. The graphics will become a platform that includes all of our campaign and public interest activity, such as http://www.illinoishighspeedtrains.com/,” Martin says.
“I am distressed that the integrity of former Governor Mike Huckabee is being compromised by the gutter politics of ‘consultants’ who seek to manipulate Republican politics for their own personal profit.
“I was assured that the Huckabee dinner would not be a political event, and on that basis I reserved a ticket a month ago. Monday I was told my ticket had disappeared. That is no way to treat a U. S. Senate campaign. No way at all.
“Paul Caprio, a sleazy political profiteer in Illinois politics, has corrupted the pro-life and pro-family movement in Illinois. Caprio is trying to create a profit-making opportunity for himself in the U. S. Senate primary.
“Caprio encouraged conservative leaders to ‘endorse’ his ‘Manchurian Candidate’ without disclosing that Caprio was on the payroll of the man he was supposedly ‘evaluating’ as a candidate. How can you impartially ‘evaluate’ someone who is paying you large sums of cash? Caprio had a blatant conflict of interest.
“Now, one of Caprio’s other ‘endorsers’ is excluding me from the Huckabee dinner. This is an insult to conservatives, and an insult to the Republican Party. If we tolerate the same dirty tricks and slimy tactics as the Democrats, why should people support the Republican Party or Illinois conservatives?
“When a tiny tax-exempt ‘pro-family’ organization is being used to promote Caprio’s agenda, then the line has been crossed from tax-exempt activity into political action. I have never had any prior problems with the Illinois Family Institute. But this year, because the leader of that organization is supporting my opponent, the line between impartiality and advocacy has been crossed by excluding me from a supposedly non-partisan dinner.
“We are preparing our litigation options, and urge Governor Huckabee to cancel his plans to come to Illinois to participate in this illegal event, which might also subject him to IRS scrutiny.
“I want Mr. Caprio to know that his sleazy politics are unacceptable in Illinois politics, in the Republican Party, and in the U. S. Senate campaign. Caprio should stop using a political action committee as his own personal piggy bank and start looking for honest work.
“Caprio should also stop corrupting and compromising distinguished individuals such as Governor Huckabee, and the tax-exempt Illinois Family Institute, by using them in his own personal profit-making schemes to support his own ‘chumbolone’ candidate.
“The idea that a Republican U. S. Senate candidate—the only one who has ever run on a statewide ballot, me--would be told there is 'no room at the inn’ for him, makes a mockery of the so-called Christian ‘ministry’ at IFI. IFI is apparently little more than another example of self-serving IRS tax evasion.
“Governor Huckabee: stay away. When the lawsuits start flying over Caprio and his machinations, you won’t be able to say you weren’t warned that you were coming to Illinois to participate in an Illegal event,” Martin will charge.
“As for Mr. David Smith, I suggest he publicly and visibly withdraw his prior endorsement of any political candidate if he intends to continue to operate a tax-exempt organization.
“Tax-exempt organizations are not supposed to be used as a smokescreen for political activity, directly or through transparent ‘endorsements’ by the management of the organization. Period. And I will enforce the law.
“The sanctity of life and the sanctity of the family are too scared to be defiled by these petty political moneychangers. With Jesus as my witness, I will turn over their tables and expose their defilement of the temple. If Governor Huckabee seriously wants to run for president again, he needs to join me in standing up for Jesus and standing up against these corrupt, tax-avoiding political Pharisees here in Illinois.”

Kurtis goes into historical locations (the “fountain of youth,” Amelia Earhart’s crashed airplane site, etc.) but ignores the important evidence around him and instead “discovers” the Internet.

In 2008, for the first time in his life Pat Hughes “discovered” he was a Republican. Hughes voted in the Republican primary. What took Hughes so long? If he registered to vote at age 18, it took him 20 years to “discover” he was a Republican. Pat’s a slow learner maybe?
Some time in 2008 or early 2009, Hughes made another “discovery.” He “discovered” he was “too busy to be an “attorney.” That was indeed a surprising discovery. Most attorneys hang on to their active law licenses until they die.
But Hughes notified the Illinois Supreme Court he was on “inactive” status. Busy, busy, Pat.
A year after deciding he was a Republican, in 2008, Hughes made yet another discovery. He “discovered” that despite the lack of any personal or political resume, he was U. S. Senator material.
Then the fun started.
Hughes began to campaign with the claim he was an outstanding attorney. There was only one problem with that “fact.” He was an “inactive” attorney. Unfortunately for Pat Hughes he is obviously not a expert on either the Illinois Supreme Court’s Rules or professional ethics.
Fortunately for Hughes, I am an expert.
I made the “discovery” that Hughes was still practicing law, in violation of Illinois Supreme Court Rule 756.
I did my due diligence on Hughes’ background. Why hadn’t Paul Caprio and Jon Zahm done theirs before Hughes announced his candidacy? Were they blinded by Hughes’ wads of cash?
With my new “discovery” that Hughes was no longer an active attorney I filed a complaint with the ARDC, the Supreme Court’s disciplinary and administrative arm.
Since Hughes and I are competing candidates for U. s. Senator, I made a public announcement of my filing.
Hughes, who seems to have more money than brains, then sent one of his paid henchmen out to attack me. Jon Zahm falsely claimed that Hughes was not violating the Court’s rules.
Guess what? I was right.
Hughes has now been forced to reregister as an “active” attorney. His period of inactivity ended when my political activity began.
Thanks to me, Hughes has now made another “discovery” in his life. He has discovered he has to obey the Illinois Supreme Court’s Rules if he wishes to call himself an attorney and practice law. I guess Hughes, who previously claimed he was too busy to be an active attorney, has now decided he is too busy to be an “inactive” lawyer. Go figure.
What will Pat Hughes “discover” next?

Dave Diersen, who is one of the most honest men in Illinois politics, if not the most honest man, and is certainly one of the hardest working Republicans, if not the hardest working, worked himself into a rouladen over my earlier criticism of Hughes and his “consultants.”
As the foregoing episode confirms, Hughes has paid lackeys who lie for him. People who actually know me are aware I have a forty-year record of independence and integrity, fighting corruption in the courts and legal profession [see www.AndyMartin.com for details.].
My pen does not pick favorites. Obviously, there is a lot more to attack in the record of Democrat-cum-Republican Mark Kirk. And I want to defeat Kirk. So most of my barbs are directed at Kirk.
But that does not mean other pretenders and political phonies in the Republican Party are temporarily immune from my criticism. An attorney who lies (don’t they all?) becomes a fair target when he wakes up one morning and “discovers” he should run for statewide office.
By splitting the anti-Kirk vote with a comic book campaign, Hughes is actually helping to nominate Kirk, even while Hughes is also helping to fatten Paul Caprio’s and Jon Zahm’s wallets.
And that’s a “discovery” Illinois Republicans are increasingly making: a vote for Pat Hughes is a vote for Mark Kirk.

(CHICAGO)(September 6, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin told a Chicago news conference Saturday that Paul Caprio’s attempt to deceive conservatives by staging a bogus endorsement process for his own undisclosed client, and by seeking to deceive Republican county chairman as to Caprio’s true role in Pat Hughes' U. S. Senate campaign, have fatally compromised both Hughes and Caprio.
“You can’t be on both sides of the fence at the same time,” Martin said. “Caprio took $10,000 in cash from Hughes, and joined Hughes’ ‘campaign,’ and then went around the state pretending to be an impartial ‘conservative leader.’ Even Illinois Democrats don’t use such fraudulent tactics any more.
“Caprio maintained a public image of impartiality, and used that false image to recruit signers to his ‘county chairmen’ letter, while he was secretly on Hughes’s payroll. If Caprio had disclosed his financial interest and his role in Hughes’ campaign, people would have said ‘Whoa,’ how can you be leading an endorsement process for your own client?
“Caprio even stooped to defrauding Phyllis Schlafly, one of the great ladies of the conservative moment. It almost looks as though Caprio would bamboozle his own mother for a buck.
“Is there no limit to how low he will stoop? Is there no limit to Pat Hughes’ embarrassing incompetence in allowing Caprio to make a laughingstock of Hughes’ campaign?
“Rather suspiciously, Hughes recently surrendered his license to practice law and went on ‘inactive’ status, though he still refers to himself as an ‘attorney.’ Maybe Hughes surrendered his law license and went on ‘inactive’ status because his professional ethics are ‘inactive.’ His campaign ethics were ‘inactive’ for sure in conducting his bogus endorsement charade. An honest lawyer would know better than to deceive the public. Hughes doesn’t have the common sense to know right from wrong. Some attorney.
“Let me be clear: Illinois Republicans will never regain the public’s trust by being as seedy as the Democrats. Conservatives will never defeat the ‘Combine’ by being as corrupt as Combine members. The only way we can win back the trust of Illinois voters is by holding ourselves to a higher standard and by showing we are more honest and open than the Democrats; not by showing that conservatives are just as sleazy as the sleaziest slime balls in Illinois politics.
“I have been fighting political corruption in Illinois for over forty (40) years. In those years I never took a penny from anyone to deceive the public about my goals. I have the scars to prove I fought crooked judges and crooked politicians and helped send the bad guys to prison. Pat Hughes didn’t even bother to vote until recently. And he wants to be a U. S. senator?
“Barack Obama’s dirt diggers and mud merchants went over my entire life last year, looking for ways to smear me. All they could come up with were stale examples where I had been attacked for exposing corruption in the courts. I am preparing to break a big judicial corruption scandal in DuPage County, right in the Republican heartland. Obama found nothing on me. I have lived an honorable life. I will continue to do so.
“Pat Hughes couldn’t even launch his own candidacy without engaging in fraud. How is he going to attack Democrats? Or even Kirk? By challenging their ethics?
“Hughes is an embarrassment to every conservative leader who announced his or her support for Hughes, and every Illinois voter who was defrauded by D. Paul Caprio’s sham endorsement charade in Bloomington.
“Hughes is apparently nothing more than a ‘front’ for Caprio’s own money-raising operations. Caprio’s ‘political consulting’ is clearly saturated with sleaze.
“If Pat Hughes is as stupid and incompetent as Caprio makes made him look, I feel sorry for Hughes. Hughes told people in Bloomington he is a great lawyer with excellent courtroom skills. If that is true, why did he make such a pathetic speech in Springfield on Republican Day? That was no great lawyer speaking. There is a big gap between what Hughes promises and what he produces, other than the $10,000 he produced for Caprio’s bank account and thousands more for others.
“The bottom line: Paul Caprio secretly orchestrated an endorsement process for his own client, while concealing his initial receipt of $10,000 from Pat Hughes, and Caprio’s ongoing role with Hughes. Caprio was using Hughes as his personal cash machine.
“Caprio’s ‘caper’ is one of the most sordid episodes in recent Illinois politics, in either party. That this shameless legerdemain was conducted by a so-called ‘family’ leader is a disgrace to the conservative movement of which Caprio claims to be a part.

(CHICAGO)(September 5, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference Saturday, September 5th to condemn corrupt endorsement practices by so-called Illinois conservative “leaders” and “pro-family” political consultants.
“D. Paul Caprio, a political consultant, who had previously received $10,000 from Pat Hughes, orchestrated a fraudulent ‘endorsement’ process for his client, and then issued a ‘letter,’ ostensibly authored by impartial ‘conservative leaders,’ claiming to endorse his paying client,” Martin will charge.
“Caprio did all of this activity without disclosing he was on Pat Hughes’ payroll. Other so-called conservatives were also claiming their thirty pieces of silver on Hughes’ payroll. They are as equally guilty as Caprio.
“Conservatives should strive to achieve honesty and openness in their political activity, not Daley Machine-style corruption. For Caprio to put $10,000 in his own pocket, and then seek to orchestrate an ‘endorsement’ of his employer was not far short of criminal fraud. Some would say he crossed the line. Caprio’s tactics are a disgrace to both himself and his ‘client’ Mr. Hughes.
“In fact, Caprio’s tactics on behalf of his client are even more fraudulent than Mark Kirk’s attempt to purchase the same Republican Party U. S. Senate nomination. Kirk paid cash on the barrel, but he did not attempt to orchestrate a bogus endorsement session as well as a bogus endorsement letter while concealing his $50,000 in blood money.
“Caprio’s situation is more sinister because while Kirk gave his money to the party, Caprio personally pocketed the cash. If this is the kind of ‘advice’ Caprio is giving Hughes, Mr. Hughes is in deep doo doo. Hughes has forfeited any credibility or integrity as a candidate for any office, let alone statewide federal office. The only position Hughes might qualify for is as a sleazy Chicago alderman.
“Imagine the outcry if ‘Combine Republicans’ had pulled what some so-called conservatives did, pocketing a pile of cash to conduct a phony endorsement session and then issuing a phony endorsement letter on behalf of their employer. Conservatives would be screaming if the Combine did that.
“Ethical conservatives should be screaming that D. Paul Caprio is using crooked activity to further his personal financial interests and his political consulting business. Caprio is an embarrassment to conservatives, pro-lifers and pro-family activists.
“Caprio doesn’t know the meaning of the term ‘conflict of interest.’ Should Caprio be allowed to grab $10,000 for his own pocket, and then pretend he is objectively ‘evaluating’ his own employer’s candidacy? Of course not.
“Let the word go forth today,” Martin will state. “I am a conservative who stands for honest government and honest politics, not D. Paul Caprio’s Daley Machine-style corrupt ‘conservative’ deal-making.
“The people who orchestrated the sham endorsement session in Bloomington in August should apologize to every Republicans—yes, even to Combine Republicans—and promise to never engage in similar acts of fraud. These people should withdraw their bogus endorsement of Hughes, and also notify county chairmen who received their fraudulent endorsement letter that some of the persons signing the 'conservative' letter were in fact on Pat Hughes payroll.

(CHICAGO)(September 5, 2009) Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin will hold a Chicago news conference Saturday, September 5th to condemn corrupt endorsement practices by so-called Illinois conservative “leaders” and “pro-family” political consultants.
“D. Paul Caprio, a political consultant, who had previously received $10,000 from Pat Hughes, orchestrated a fraudulent ‘endorsement’ process for his client, and then issued a ‘letter,’ ostensibly authored by impartial ‘conservative leaders,’ claiming to endorse his paying client,” Martin will charge.
“Caprio did all of this activity without disclosing he was on Pat Hughes’ payroll. Other so-called conservatives were also claiming their thirty pieces of silver on Hughes’ payroll. They are as equally guilty as Caprio.
“Conservatives should strive to achieve honesty and openness in their political activity, not Daley Machine-style corruption. For Caprio to put $10,000 in his own pocket, and then seek to orchestrate an ‘endorsement’ of his employer was not far short of criminal fraud. Some would say he crossed the line. Caprio’s tactics are a disgrace to both himself and his ‘client’ Mr. Hughes.
“In fact, Caprio’s tactics on behalf of his client are even more fraudulent than Mark Kirk’s attempt to purchase the same Republican Party U. S. Senate nomination. Kirk paid cash on the barrel, but he did not attempt to orchestrate a bogus endorsement session as well as a bogus endorsement letter while concealing his $50,000 in blood money.
“Caprio’s situation is more sinister because while Kirk gave his money to the party, Caprio personally pocketed the cash. If this is the kind of ‘advice’ Caprio is giving Hughes, Mr. Hughes is in deep doo doo. Hughes has forfeited any credibility or integrity as a candidate for any office, let alone statewide federal office. The only position Hughes might qualify for is as a sleazy Chicago alderman.
“Imagine the outcry if ‘Combine Republicans’ had pulled what some so-called conservatives did, pocketing a pile of cash to conduct a phony endorsement session and then issuing a phony endorsement letter on behalf of their employer. Conservatives would be screaming if the Combine did that.
“Ethical conservatives should be screaming that D. Paul Caprio is using crooked activity to further his personal financial interests and his political consulting business. Caprio is an embarrassment to conservatives, pro-lifers and pro-family activists.
“Caprio doesn’t know the meaning of the term ‘conflict of interest.’ Should Caprio be allowed to grab $10,000 for his own pocket, and then pretend he is objectively ‘evaluating’ his own employer’s candidacy? Of course not.
“Let the word go forth today,” Martin will state. “I am a conservative who stands for honest government and honest politics, not D. Paul Caprio’s Daley Machine-style corrupt ‘conservative’ deal-making.
“The people who orchestrated the sham endorsement session in Bloomington in August should apologize to every Republicans—yes, even to Combine Republicans—and promise to never engage in similar acts of fraud. These people should withdraw their bogus endorsement of Hughes, and also notify county chairmen who received their fraudulent endorsement letter that some of the persons signing the 'conservative' letter were in fact on Pat Hughes payroll.
