Pat Hughes launches a disastrous U. S. Senate campaign, and ends up pitting conservative against conservative
How can Hughes run a statewide campaign on forty thousand dollars?
Andy Martin calls Hughes the “Chumbolone Candidate of the Century,” offers a $25 prize to anyone who can suggest a worse campaign than Hughes’
(CHICAGO)(October 20, 2009) It hardly seems believable but Patrick Hughes launched his “chumbolone campaign” for the U. S. Senate only sixty (60) days ago in Springfield on August 20th.
Since then, Hughes has careened from one calamity to another:
1. Hughes has avoided voting in elections most of his life, and only voted Republican for the first time in 2008. When challenged about these gaps, Hughes said he was “too busy” to vote. If Hughes only discovered he was a Republican in 2008, what did he think he was before 2008? Inquiring minds want to know.
2. Hughes hired conservative profiteer D. Paul Caprio to launch his senate campaign. By October 1st, Caprio had been thrown under the bus. Why did Hughes dump Caprio? Caprio’s claim that he left after Hughes’ campaign was “up and running” is a face-saving joke.
3. Hughes says he is an outstanding attorney. Andy Martin disclosed that Hughes had placed himself on “inactive” status with the Illinois Supreme Court. Hughes violated Illinois Supreme Court Rules by holding himself out as a practicing attorney. Hughes was forced to pay past due fees and renew his active status. Jon Zahm smeared Andy for telling the truth.
4. Hughes claimed he is a “real estate developer.” His major real estate development failed to put a shovel in the ground and was sued for non-performance. Now that’s a development!
5. Nine of Hughes’ supporters issued a letter to Republican county chairmen saying they supported Hughes, but failed to disclose some of the signers of the letter were on Hughes’ payroll. By mid-October, Hughes’ original nine signers have shrunk to six for a new letter on October 16th (see below).
6. On August 20th Hughes said he has $400,000 in financial “commitments.” By September 30th, Hughes’ “commitments” have shrunk to $130,000. What happened to the other $270,000 in commitments? Hughes was forced to loan his personal funds to his campaign to make up for the missing “commitments.”
7. Hughes calls himself a wealthy developer and investor, but came out against extending unemployment benefits to Illinois citizens who are facing the brunt of a brutal recession. Hughes’ remarks were the modern equivalent of “let them eat cake.” Who advised Hughes to take this stand? Caprio? Wealthy developer-in-a-recession anyone?
8. On October 16th Hughes “adviser” Caprio and five other individuals (down from nine in August) demanded that Eric Wallace and John Arrington withdraw as senate candidates. Caprio & Co. claimed that Wallace and Arrington previously agreed to do so. Both Wallace and Arrington deny any such “agreement to withdraw” exists. Wallace and Arrington are the Illinois GOP’s only statewide African-American candidates.
9. Hughes claimed he had been “endorsed” by NFL legend Mike Ditka. Hughes also claimed Ditka agreed to serve on Hughes’ “finance committee.” (The “finance committee” with the missing $270,000?) Andy Martin investigated and disclosed that Hughes lied. There was no "Ditka endorsement." Ditka issued statements denying he ever endorsed Hughes and denying he ever agreed to serve on Hughes' “finance committee.” In retaliation, Hughes campaign manager Charlie Johnston called Ditka a liar.
10. Hughes disclosed he launched his statewide senate campaign by spending only $40,000 in two months. An independent (non-Martin) web posting says:
“Those in the know say the Hughes candidacy is self-destructing. Funds are scarce. No organization. Operatives have quit. He has no damage control on the Ditka scandal.” (Source: IllinoisReview.com, October 19th)
11. October 19th D. Paul Caprio (him again) launched a “defense” of his role in the Hughes campaign, and triggered a new round of recriminations and counterattacks.
Where is Hughes in all of this chaos? Good question. Maybe hiding. And he wants to be a U. S. Senator?

“We are planning a news conference, town hall meeting and meet and greet in Carbondale on October 2nd,” Martin said. “I understand we will also visit the Carbondale Downtown Art & Wine Fair.
“Saturday we will be having an additional event, very possibly in Effingham, before attending a Republican Party function.
“In 2008 I carried or nearly carried forty (40) Illinois counties and received a quarter of a million votes. I am the only Republican candidate for U. S. Senator who has actually run statewide. And although I currently live in Chicago, my original roots are in Champaign, where my mother came as a graduate student, bringing her family with her.
“When I came to Illinois as a 17 year-old, the first Illinois town I set foot in was Effingham. I can still remember that evening vividly.
“Unlike all of my opponents in both parties, I have actually been the catalyst for major highway construction downstate. I don’t just promise; I produce.
“Our first campaign swing in Southern Illinois will be guided by performance first and politics second. Between now and October 2-3 we will schedule meetings, set specific times and dates, and begin the work of bringing this great state together. ‘One Illinois’ is my slogan; one Illinois is my goal.”
The following weekend (October 9th) Martin will be in Champaign to celebrate Illini Homecoming and forty years since his graduation from the University of Illinois College of Law.

First, Martin will conduct a “Meet and Greet” for Republicans who want to meet the senate candidate, at the Mark Twain Hotel in downtown Peoria from 7:00 A.M. to 8:30 A.M.
All Republicans are invited!
Second, Andy will hold a Town Hall meeting on Peoria’s future transportation needs. He supports expedited links between the Peoria, Chicago and St. Louis metropolitan areas. Details on the location of the town meeting will be provided later today.
Finally, Martin will march in the Central Illinois Tea Party Patriots procession from the U. S. Courthouse to the Peoria County Courthouse, starting at 11:00 A.M.
“I can’t commend central Illinois patriots enough for remembering Constitution Day,” Martin said Tuesday, September 15th. “Constitution Day is a forgotten holiday in American history but it was one of the most significant events in our republic. On September 17, 1787, American patriots signed the new Constitution and created a nation governed by limited federal powers, and an explicit separation of powers.
“We know the founders did a good job, because we have only had to amend the Constitution a handful of times over the ensuing centuries.
“Of course we still have a healthy debate about what the constitution means. That’s all to the good. Ultimately our Constitution is both an enabler and protector of our ‘inalienable rights’ mentioned in the Declaration of Independence.
“Often we mistakenly think only of judges as protectors of the Constitution. But the Constitution clearly vests all three branches of government with a role in interpreting and implementing the document. Judges play a critical role, but they do not play the only role. U. S. Senators also have work to do, ensuring that our modern laws are faithful to the Constitution,” Martin said
Martin will issue media availability updates and locations for his Town Hall meeting later Wednesday, September 18th.
Martin will arrive in Peoria Wednesday evening to prepare for Thursday’s events.

(CHICAGO)(September 5, 2009) I support the right of any candidate to run. People criticize me, and I criticize my opponents and their backers. That’s how the electoral process functions. But, ultimately, supporters of a candidate have to ask themselves: is his or her strategy viable?
Mark Kirk’s strategy for the U. S. Senate cannot succeed. That is why Kirk has sought to purchase the nomination by “donating” $50,000 to the Illinois Republican “Combine” Party.
Kirk’s theory is that a “liberal Republican” from the extremely liberal North Shore suburbs of Chicago can be elected to statewide office as a “moderate” or “liberal” Republican. This belief is delusional for two reasons.
First, let me admit that as one of Kirks competitors I am envious at the showering of media attention on Kirk’s doomed campaign. The liberal media just love to lavish attention on Kirk. Why? Because they want a liberal to win the Republican Senate primary. How many conservatives actually work at Chicago TV stations and newspapers? None.
But what the media giveth, the media also taketh away. The love fest with Kirk is only going to last until February 2nd. Once the Democratic candidate is determined, Kirk’s liberalism will be the reason the media reject Kirk. You can already see that happening within the liberal interest groups that heavily influence media coverage. They are attacking Kirk as a “conservative.” They want no part of a “Senator Kirk.”
Is it logical; is it rational to believe that on February 3rd Democrats are suddenly going to embrace Mark Kirk? Kirk may even be a radical on the issues, but he would vote for Republican leadership in the Senate. So Kirk is not going to win liberal votes. The day after the primary, liberal media support for Kirk will evaporate.
Well, you say, Kirk can run as a moderate. Here is where Kirk has hung himself with his own nose. If he tries to tack “moderate” in the general election, his friends in the liberal media will abandon him as a turncoat. So Mark Kirk is running a doomed campaign for the U. S. Senate.
Why is Kirk really running? In my opinion Kirk is a stalking horse for his friends in the Obama administration, such as Rahm Emanuel, who do not want a conservative Republican to emerge as the candidate for Senator.
Obama is terrified that my campaign might catch fire and win the nomination. Here’s why: first Obamabots know I am a ferocious opponent of Obama and everything he stands for. Obama knows my internet attacks cost him millions of votes in 2008. He knows how devastating I could be as a Senator.
Second, Obama knows what Republicans want (his pollsters are not stupid). They don’t want Mark Kirk. So if Obama’s liberal media quietly convince Republicans to nominate Kirk, he will be an easy candidate for Republicans to abandon in November, 2010. Republicans are already threatening to do precisely that!
In a column this week, Roger Simon (no conservative himself) ran the following remarks from Greg Mueller, “a political consultant who specializes in conservative candidates.”

Dear Ms. Spayd and Gentlemen:
I spent several hours today on the phone with a Post reporter in the Rockville bureau. Originally he told me he had wandered into court this morning and seen an interesting case. Not aware that he was lying, I then faxed him 85 pages of material.
After I indicated I would be contacting you to involve the Post in a major political scandal he called back and claimed his "source" was “Scott Shirley.”
Post Reporter Dan Moore called back and gave me more “fill” concerning the story. His latest version is that he got an e-mail from someone who claimed he had filed a “peace bond” in Montgomery County against a candidate for U. S. Senator in Illinois, and then gratuitously started exhaustively investigating the candidate's past going back 40 years. Hmmm..
Morse then claims to have “researched” the story by digging into my past and contacting people with obscure relationships to me, none of which matters even remotely bear on the Maryland litigation. Hmmm, again.
Clearly, the Post has either been duped or is being knowingly and willingly used to publish a smear article on me, over the suppression of an Obama tape that was prepared in April concerning his missing birth information.
In other words, because of Mr. Morse’s machinations and his initial lack of candor, the Post is now part of the story. Unless you believe he got an e-mail from someone telling him to write a story about what is facially a fraudulent proceeding in Maryland, and Morse just went off and started investigating. Hmmm, again.
I have asked the Montgomery County State Attorney for a criminal investigation. You need more reporters on this story; Morse is now part of the scandal.
In order to get at the relationship between your reporter and Mr. Scott Shirley, I will be naming the Post and Morse as defendants in a lawsuit arising out of the fraudulent judicial proceedings in Rockville. The Post is now in this miasma up to its neck.
You are welcome to have another reporter, or your legal department, contact me. Mr. Morse is welcome to call me, provided you are on notice he is a potential defendant along with the Post. I do not expect to get to the Shirley/Montgomery/Morse lawsuit until Tuesday, and it may not be filed until as late as Wednesday.
Please understand that I am not suggesting Mr. Morse asked me about anything that is not already in the public domain. What was interesting is that he did "research" orchestrated by my political opponents as part of “researching” a story about an obscure mope, Scott Shirley, who was paid $335 to tape a conference, by virtue of which the Post has now become the pivot in a major political scandal involving the Post and someone inside Obama’s dirt diggers/mud merchants.
Mr. Morse taped most of our conversations, with my consent, and I think you will find listening to the tape informative. I am sure you will be having someone transcribe the tape and I would appreciate a courtesy copy of all of your transcripts.
Please get back to me at your earliest convenience. If I do not hear from you or your attorneys, I will assume you admit the essentials of my allegations and expect to defend the Post in an Illinois Court. (The Post does business in Illinois and is subject to personal jurisdiction there.)
I am flattered that my political opponents go to such extreme lengths to smear me. Now that's a real story that you should be covering. Maybe Howard Kurtz should investigate why some jerk in Rockville was allegedly sending e-mails to a Post reporter soliciting news coverage for an Illinois U. S. Senate race, and a Post reporter simply fell for the lure, or so he claims.
My friends, we have a mini-Watergate on our hands.
I am suspicious of why the Post would not object to being used as a foil in such a smear operation.

I am flattered that my political opponents go to such extreme lengths to smear me. Now that's a real story that you should be covering. Maybe Howard Kurtz should investigate why some jerk in Rockville was allegedly sending e-mails to a Post reporter soliciting news coverage for an Illinois U. S. Senate race, and a Post reporter simply fell for the lure, or so he claims.
My friends, we have a mini-Watergate on our hands.
I am suspicious of why the Post would not object to being used as a foil in such a smear operation.

Republican U. S. Senate candidate and insurgent “Internet Powerhouse” Andy Martin unleashed a dazzling display of the star power that is increasingly making him the favorite of rank-and-file Republicans in Illinois.
In perhaps a reminder that Kirk’s childless marriage had recently ended, Andy marched the entire length of the parade with a three year-old boy riding on his shoulders. Little children along the parade route screamed with joy as the airborne cherub flying on Andy’s shoulders passed by.
“Kirk has me beat in the cash department, for now,” Martin stated. “But we beat him today in front of his own people, in his own congressional district. We brought 'Fighting Illini' spirit to the parade. It was embarrassingly evident out there in plain sight for everyone to see. Kirk is a coward. For myself, I love children, and children love me, so the parade was a special moment. Kirk was apparently afraid to confront Martin’s allegations in a Lake Forest news conference that Kirk’s 2006 and 2008 reelection campaigns used racist tactics. Martin pointed out that Kirk’s tactics were part of an expansive pattern of racist behavior by Kirk that had been concealed by passive Chicago media; Kirk's despicable tactics had left him unwelcome in more than 20% of the state’s households. “How is Kirk going to run a campaign against the Democratic majority by demeaning voters with racist epithets?” Martin asked.
“We haven’t even gotten to the ‘good stuff’ about Kirk, and he’s already gone into hiding?” Martin asked. “The evidence that Kirk has repeatedly used racist tactics is there; that he maintains a racist ideology is unavoidable,” Martin says. “We are going to use it against him in the primary, and the Dems are going to demolish him if he beats me and limps to a primary victory.”
Kirk’s absence from a stellar event in one the most affluent communities in the United States demonstrated the extent of the stunning collapse in his popular support.
“He has some cash,” Martin said, “But he can’t ‘carry’ Republican primary voters. My campaign doesn't have enough money yet, but we are slowly going to strangle Kirk's sources of financial support. No one wants to back a dog that won't hunt. He can’t collect campaign cash by hiding from Republicans. Even ‘fat cats’ are not stupid.
“Today, Mark Kirk is dead meat as a senate candidate. I am going to call his buddy Rahm Emanuel and have Rahmmie send Kirk some of Emanuel’s legendary putrefying fish. Maybe they can cook it together.”

Dear Tolbert:
It seems that like a perennial blight, you are always there to embarrass New Trier Township Republicans with your dirty, Daley-style corruption of the Republican Party.
I regret the necessity to send this legal notice but your latest misbehavior and subservience to Andy McKenna may make legal action unavoidable.
Your township web site lists all of the candidates for Governor, but only one candidate for U.S. Senator, “Our candidate” Mark Kirk. Obviously, you are trying to rig the party’s support for one office while remaining “open” for other offices. As a “banker,” or self-styled banker, you should know such discrimination violates both Illinois and federal law.
My experience with New Trier Republicans is that they very democratically conduct an “endorsement” session at which they invite all candidates for all offices to appear. No such endorsement session has been held for any office. Thus Kirk is not “your” candidate and not NTRO’s candidate. The web site claim is objectively false.
I respect your right as an individual to support whomever you wish. But you have no right to rig your township organization without any legal authorization from the committeemen to do so.
At some point in the future, NTRO may conduct an endorsement session for all offices, and I suppose you can try to corrupt that vote when it takes place. But at least until all of the committeemen have assembled and voted for all the offices through a formal and independent procedure, you are not allowed to substitute your personal choice as the organization’s choice.
In order to avoid a lawsuit next week, in which you personally and your personal assets will also be placed at risk as an admitted supporter of Mr. Kirk, I will offer you one of two reasonable options:
You can remove Kirk from the “Our Candidates” list, or you can list all candidates who have filed with the U. S. Senate as a candidate for that office (U. S. Senate candidates must file with the U. S. Senate). That includes me, and my web site. All I am asking for is a fair and level playing field.
If you persist in fraudulently using the NTRO web site to broadcast a nonexistent endorsement, a lawsuit will be filed against you, Kirk and NTRO seeking damages as well as additional relief.
In closing, please allow me to offer some thoughts which many would consider wise words concerning Mr. Kirk.
First, superficially, Mark Kirk appears to be an attractive candidate. Superficially. Mark has raised money in the past, as an incumbent. However, his fund raising prowess as a statewide candidate in a party that is incredibly hostile to him is unproven. Kirk's prior fund raising was nothing but political extortion inside the Washington Beltway. Previously Mark has not generated any significant financial support inside Illinois.
Second, while you claim Kirk is “purple,” many would consider him "pink." Kirk is more liberal than any of the Blue Dog Democrats in Congress. Kirk and Barney Frank make a nice pair together. But someone who is not even up to the standards of a Blue Dog Democrat is a radical, not a moderate.
Third, while the media support Kirk as the conventional choice for Republicans in our primary, the media are not going to back Kirk in November 2010 when he comes up against a Democrat. The media’s agenda is liberal, and they will break for the “D.” So current media adulation is a false indicator of Kirk's future media acceptability.
Fourth, with over forty (40) years of experience in Illinois politics, I have never seen a candidate who creates more hostility among the Republican rank-and-file than Mark Kirk. The anger against Kirk is incredible. You may not agree with my views, or may dislike me personally, but you ought not to so easily discount forty years of experience.
Fifth, Kirk’s fundamental political strategy is fatally flawed. Your piece at NTRO.org suggests that the way for Republicans to win in Illinois is to go “liberal.” That is just flatly wrong. "Liberalism" is a theology, and theological holy warriors are not going to vote for the alternative when they can vote for one of their own true believers.
Conservatism, on the other hand, is not a rigid ideology or orthodoxy. Conservatives come in all shapes and sizes. They can open their minds, and often switch their votes. The way to win in Illinois is not to skew slightly to the left but, rather, slightly to the right. Mark Kirk is far left. There is no way Kirk is going to win any conservative Democrats.
People of a certain age (which includes yourself) love to reminisce over the “Reagan Democrats” that brought Ronald Reagan to power. Regan Democrats were culturally conservative working-class Democrats, not country club liberals.

Are you planning to recruit Alan Keyes to move back to Illinois “permanently” for the second time if the media slip Kirk a Mickey?
I will be marching this Wednesday in the Lake Forest Day Parade. That area used to be Mark Kirk's “base.” It no longer is. Please answer a question for me: if Mark Kirk has lost his Republican base in the Tenth District, how is he going to build a new “base” in the statewide Republican party, which is considerably more conservative than Republicans in the 10th District? Good question.
I hope we can avoid a lawsuit. You have your options above. Please respond in writing if you wish to settle this matter.

Dear Tolbert:
It seems that like a perennial blight, you are always there to embarrass New Trier Township Republicans with your dirty, Daley-style corruption of the Republican Party.
I regret the necessity to send this legal notice but your latest misbehavior and subservience to Andy McKenna may make legal action unavoidable.
Your township web site lists all of the candidates for Governor, but only one candidate for U.S. Senator, “Our candidate” Mark Kirk. Obviously, you are trying to rig the party’s support for one office while remaining “open” for other offices. As a “banker,” or self-styled banker, you should know such discrimination violates both Illinois and federal law.
My experience with New Trier Republicans is that they very democratically conduct an “endorsement” session at which they invite all candidates for all offices to appear. No such endorsement session has been held for any office. Thus Kirk is not “your” candidate and not NTRO’s candidate. The web site claim is objectively false.
I respect your right as an individual to support whomever you wish. But you have no right to rig your township organization without any legal authorization from the committeemen to do so.
At some point in the future, NTRO may conduct an endorsement session for all offices, and I suppose you can try to corrupt that vote when it takes place. But at least until all of the committeemen have assembled and voted for all the offices through a formal and independent procedure, you are not allowed to substitute your personal choice as the organization’s choice.
In order to avoid a lawsuit next week, in which you personally and your personal assets will also be placed at risk as an admitted supporter of Mr. Kirk, I will offer you one of two reasonable options:
You can remove Kirk from the “Our Candidates” list, or you can list all candidates who have filed with the U. S. Senate as a candidate for that office (U. S. Senate candidates must file with the U. S. Senate). That includes me, and my web site. All I am asking for is a fair and level playing field.
If you persist in fraudulently using the NTRO web site to broadcast a nonexistent endorsement, a lawsuit will be filed against you, Kirk and NTRO seeking damages as well as additional relief.
In closing, please allow me to offer some thoughts which many would consider wise words concerning Mr. Kirk.
First, superficially, Mark Kirk appears to be an attractive candidate. Superficially. Mark has raised money in the past, as an incumbent. However, his fund raising prowess as a statewide candidate in a party that is incredibly hostile to him is unproven. Kirk's prior fund raising was nothing but political extortion inside the Washington Beltway. Previously Mark has not generated any significant financial support inside Illinois.
Second, while you claim Kirk is “purple,” many would consider him "pink." Kirk is more liberal than any of the Blue Dog Democrats in Congress. Kirk and Barney Frank make a nice pair together. But someone who is not even up to the standards of a Blue Dog Democrat is a radical, not a moderate.
Third, while the media support Kirk as the conventional choice for Republicans in our primary, the media are not going to back Kirk in November 2010 when he comes up against a Democrat. The media’s agenda is liberal, and they will break for the “D.” So current media adulation is a false indicator of Kirk's future media acceptability.
Fourth, with over forty (40) years of experience in Illinois politics, I have never seen a candidate who creates more hostility among the Republican rank-and-file than Mark Kirk. The anger against Kirk is incredible. You may not agree with my views, or may dislike me personally, but you ought not to so easily discount forty years of experience.
Fifth, Kirk’s fundamental political strategy is fatally flawed. Your piece at NTRO.org suggests that the way for Republicans to win in Illinois is to go “liberal.” That is just flatly wrong. "Liberalism" is a theology, and theological holy warriors are not going to vote for the alternative when they can vote for one of their own true believers.
Conservatism, on the other hand, is not a rigid ideology or orthodoxy. Conservatives come in all shapes and sizes. They can open their minds, and often switch their votes. The way to win in Illinois is not to skew slightly to the left but, rather, slightly to the right. Mark Kirk is far left. There is no way Kirk is going to win any conservative Democrats.
People of a certain age (which includes yourself) love to reminisce over the “Reagan Democrats” that brought Ronald Reagan to power. Regan Democrats were culturally conservative working-class Democrats, not country club liberals.

Some professional politicians are convinced Kirk is a viable candidate. He is a sure loser in November 2010 because his campaign is aimed at raising money from “Country Club” Republicans. I want to rebuild the Republican Party as the party of Main Street, not Wall Street.
How many Reagan Democrats belonged to a Country Club? Or could afford a $500 a ticket fund raiser? Not many.
Still, we need to raise huge sums of money to stay competitive.
If we can’t garner enough financial support we will lose, Kirk will win, and Americans will be the losers when politics as usual triumphs again.
If you can afford to contribute, please do. Give up to the legal limits. (Federal law requires you provide an occupation and address if you give more than $200). If you can’t contribute, please ask those who can to do so. Small amounts, large amounts, anything and everything helps.

(CHICAGO)(July 27, 2009) One of the things counter-intelligence teaches us is to ask the non-obvious questions. Sometimes even off-the-wall analysis of an event can provide more insight than obvious explanations for what happened. Sometime the unlikely is even true.
Regular readers also know that I am trained as a lawyer, although I do not practice law. Lawyers are trained “professional paranoids,” who often ask outlandish questions in order to focus in on and frame the reality of unreality. That’s what we do.
Here is what we know: Gates came home. Someone saw him forcing his way into his house and called the police. The officer who arrived had no history of racial antagonism. On the contrary, he was respected for dealing with minorities. Cambridge is a “liberal” college town where the local police are slow to anger and even slower to arrest.
Gates became angry, confrontational and vile without any police provocation, yelling about being a “black man in America” and accusing police of “racial profiling.”
Obvious answer: Gates “exploded” and started abusing the officer, whereupon he was arrested. This is the conventional wisdom.
But the conventional interpretation leaves us a little flat.
Gates has been a shrewd racial profiteer for decades. He has done well peddling his “scholarly” work on Black history. He has no history of explosive confrontations with whites and, taking him at his word, his life has been devoted to precisely the opposite, racial harmony. So why the big bang with the Cambridge cops?
Here is my alternative reality of what happened. Don’t tell anyone you heard it from the columnist left-wing media consider the undisputed “commander-in-chief of conspiracy theories.”
Gates has been planning a PBS documentary on racial profiling. In terms that journalists use, he wanted to “write himself into the story.” A policeman turned up on his doorstep and, like a tarantula, Gates pounced.
Gates was awfully quick to promote a PBS program based on his arrest:

What is missing from the public record to date: (1) the so-called complaining witness has never been interviewed in depth by the media, although she was standing outside Gates’ house when the police arrived. Her identity is known. (2) Cambridge Police have “dismissed” the charges, but the 911 tapes have not yet been released. We don’t know what the witness said to the police dispatcher, and we don’t have any of the other police communications.
Today the New York Post wrote of Gates’ remarks:

I began to wonder if Gates was not using Sergeant Crowley and the Cambridge Police to promote himself.
The accusation of “racial profiling” is facially absurd. The police did not profile Gates. They got a report of a burglary in progress and responded.
Not surprisingly, pampered Mr. Gates lives in public housing, tax exempt property owned and subsidized by Harvard University. He could have simply said to the investigating officer. “You know, Harvard owns this property. Give them a call to check me out.” He claims he was on the phone to Harvard for free maintenance when Sergeant Crowley arrived:

Gates was calm enough to assess the “damage” to his door and to call the Harvard maintenance people before police appeared. There was no reason for him to fly into a rage.

The idea that just because someone is physically small (“150 pounds”) they don’t have a gun, so police should not be concerned with his belligerence, is so absurd as to make Gates a laughingstock. What planet has he been living on for the past half century? Planet Harvard.
Interestingly, the original witness, who is a Harvard employee, has practically disappeared from public view. The 911 tapes? Missing. Cover-up? You be the judge.

And they wonder why no one reads their newspapers any more.

(CHICAGO)(July 22, 2009) For the past five years, Barack Obama and I have been locked in a struggle over my efforts to discover his true identity. I want the facts. He wants to hide the truth about himself. It’s that simple.
I wrote a book, “Obama: The Man Behind The Mask,” that details my earlier efforts. (The book leaves off in June, 2008).
We still do not know who Barack Obama is. What we do know is that whoever he is, he lied to the American people. Today he is violating all of the “promises” he made to voters.
Over the past several months I have done columns at ContrarianCommentary.com detailing how the “birther” movement is on the brink of exploding into the mainstream. Now it’s happened.
I predicted, correctly as it turns out, that as Obama’s polls went down, questions about his birth certificate would go up. It's all there in our earlier writing.
Tuesday night David Shuster, who is guest ghosting on MSNBC’s Countdown, derided the “birth certificate conspiracy.” Shuster had a guest, Chris Kofinis, suggest that anyone who is concerned about Obama’s origins, is a “wing nut.”
Sadly, the wing nuts were Shuster and Kofinis, who admitted and documented their own ignorance on national television.
Barack Obama has never released or authorized the release of his original, typewritten 1961 birth certificate. Why? What is he hiding? Good question.
I have a lawsuit pending, currently in both the Hawai’i Supreme Court and circuit court (Martin v. Lingle), seeking to pry loose Obama's archival information. Hawai’i is resisting release. Go to my blogs (see below), pick one, and you can read the Hawai’i Supreme court documents.
Tuesday night Rachel Maddow also certified on MSNBC that the birth certificate had gone “mainstream." We are winning; liberals are losing.
But Maddow also misled her viewers and demonstrated her ignorance of the birth certificate issue. Maddow used Dave Weigel, another leftist clown who pretends to be a journalist, to attack “birthers.”
Maddow, Shuster and the other lefties are starting to panic. "Birther power” is “surging.” Leftist power is already on the wane.
Maddow tried to make fun of CNN’s Lou Dobbs and called Dobbs a “birther.” While Dobbs does not fully understand the birth certificate controversy, and he has sought advice from people who confuse, not clarify, the matter, Dobbs is on the right track. Maddow is not.
Liberals love conspiracy theories. They suggest that anyone questioning Obama’s origins is involved in a “conspiracy.” That is simply not true. I did not start a conspiracy. I started a movement seeking to demand the facts about Obama's origins and college years. For the past five years I have been searching for the truth and trying to find out the facts about Obama’s origins and early life. I am not a part of any conspiracy.
I am engaged in basic historical inquiry about who Obama is, where he was born, where he went to college. Don't we know the detailed life history of every other president?
What are the undisputed facts? What are the facts that the liberal, pro-Obama mainstream media do not want you to know? The facts are relatively simple and straightforward.
1. The lawsuit I filed in October, 2008 in Honolulu pried loose the admission by the Hawai’i Department of Health that they had an original 1961 birth certificate.
2. Obama claims to have been born in Hawai'i. In 1961, Hawai’i used typewritten records. Similar certificates have been posted on the Internet so it is not difficult to determine what the blank form looked like in 1961 when Obama was born.
3. Hawai’i has recently computerized some of its archival records. The “birth certificate” that Obama posted on the Internet is not a copy of his original, typewritten 1961 document. Rather, he posted a computer generated facsimile of some information contained in a Hawai'i state computer data base. The “certificate” posted by Obama bears no connection to the original 1961 document.
4. What is missing from Obama’s laser-printed “certificate?” The computer-generated reproduction contains considerably less detail. Even in 2009 there has been a raging controversy over where Obama was born in Hawai'i. Varying and conflicting explanations have been given. Some media listed one hospital; others listed another. The issue has never been resolved. The lack of factual information about Obama is not a “conspiracy.” It is a gap in public knowledge about who Obama really is.
5. We do not know what claims Obama made to Occidental College, Columbia College and Harvard Law School to obtain “affirmative action” admission. Shades of Sonia Sotomayor. Obama refuses to provide access to his college records even though Sotomayor has disclosed hers.

But, but, but, we continue to search for the truth about Obama, and we are constantly trying to find the facts. No conspiracies. Just facts. Sorry Rachel. You’ll have to pick on another boy.

(CHICAGO)(July 22, 2009) For the past five years, Barack Obama and I have been locked in a struggle over my efforts to discover his true identity. I want the facts. He wants to hide the truth about himself. It’s that simple.
I wrote a book, “Obama: The Man Behind The Mask,” that details my earlier efforts. (The book leaves off in June, 2008).
We still do not know who Barack Obama is. What we do know is that whoever he is, he lied to the American people. Today he is violating all of the “promises” he made to voters.
Over the past several months I have done columns at ContrarianCommentary.com detailing how the “birther” movement is on the brink of exploding into the mainstream. Now it’s happened.
I predicted, correctly as it turns out, that as Obama’s polls went down, questions about his birth certificate would go up. It's all there in our earlier writing.
Tuesday night David Shuster, who is guest ghosting on MSNBC’s Countdown, derided the “birth certificate conspiracy.” Shuster had a guest, Chris Kofinis, suggest that anyone who is concerned about Obama’s origins, is a “wing nut.”
Sadly, the wing nuts were Shuster and Kofinis, who admitted and documented their own ignorance on national television.
Barack Obama has never released or authorized the release of his original, typewritten 1961 birth certificate. Why? What is he hiding? Good question.
I have a lawsuit pending, currently in both the Hawai’i Supreme Court and circuit court (Martin v. Lingle), seeking to pry loose Obama's archival information. Hawai’i is resisting release. Go to my blogs (see below), pick one, and you can read the Hawai’i Supreme court documents.
Tuesday night Rachel Maddow also certified on MSNBC that the birth certificate had gone “mainstream." We are winning; liberals are losing.
But Maddow also misled her viewers and demonstrated her ignorance of the birth certificate issue. Maddow used Dave Weigel, another leftist clown who pretends to be a journalist, to attack “birthers.”
Maddow, Shuster and the other lefties are starting to panic. "Birther power” is “surging.” Leftist power is already on the wane.
Maddow tried to make fun of CNN’s Lou Dobbs and called Dobbs a “birther.” While Dobbs does not fully understand the birth certificate controversy, and he has sought advice from people who confuse, not clarify, the matter, Dobbs is on the right track. Maddow is not.
Liberals love conspiracy theories. They suggest that anyone questioning Obama’s origins is involved in a “conspiracy.” That is simply not true. I did not start a conspiracy. I started a movement seeking to demand the facts about Obama's origins and college years. For the past five years I have been searching for the truth and trying to find out the facts about Obama’s origins and early life. I am not a part of any conspiracy.
I am engaged in basic historical inquiry about who Obama is, where he was born, where he went to college. Don't we know the detailed life history of every other president?
What are the undisputed facts? What are the facts that the liberal, pro-Obama mainstream media do not want you to know? The facts are relatively simple and straightforward.
1. The lawsuit I filed in October, 2008 in Honolulu pried loose the admission by the Hawai’i Department of Health that they had an original 1961 birth certificate.
2. Obama claims to have been born in Hawai'i. In 1961, Hawai’i used typewritten records. Similar certificates have been posted on the Internet so it is not difficult to determine what the blank form looked like in 1961 when Obama was born.
3. Hawai’i has recently computerized some of its archival records. The “birth certificate” that Obama posted on the Internet is not a copy of his original, typewritten 1961 document. Rather, he posted a computer generated facsimile of some information contained in a Hawai'i state computer data base. The “certificate” posted by Obama bears no connection to the original 1961 document.
4. What is missing from Obama’s laser-printed “certificate?” The computer-generated reproduction contains considerably less detail. Even in 2009 there has been a raging controversy over where Obama was born in Hawai'i. Varying and conflicting explanations have been given. Some media listed one hospital; others listed another. The issue has never been resolved. The lack of factual information about Obama is not a “conspiracy.” It is a gap in public knowledge about who Obama really is.
5. We do not know what claims Obama made to Occidental College, Columbia College and Harvard Law School to obtain “affirmative action” admission. Shades of Sonia Sotomayor. Obama refuses to provide access to his college records even though Sotomayor has disclosed hers.

But, but, but, we continue to search for the truth about Obama, and we are constantly trying to find the facts. No conspiracies. Just facts. Sorry Rachel. You’ll have to pick on another boy.
My appearance on Hannity’s America has gone down in political history as the most controversial and most accurate exposé of Obama during the 2008 election. If I am elected to the U. S. Senate, I will make it a priority to convene Senate hearings seeking to subpoena Obama’s original college records and original birth records. We need to know who this man really is.

Illinois Republican Andy Martin today called Barack Obama’s proposed health care plan nothing more than government-sponsored euthanasia. “I can reduce the thousands of pages of proposed laws to a single word: euthanasia,” Martin charged. “What Barack Obama wants to do is slowly withdraw health care from our elderly population. He wants to target the most vulnerable in our society for extermination through bureaucratic empowerment. I am deciphering Obamacare so you don’t have to waste timer sitting in front of the tube tonight watching President Barry O try to lie to you and pretend he’s not really trying to kill your parents. (Now you can take a walk or exercise, in the time you have wasted listening to the Great One; how’s that for my contribution to your good health?)
Politicians and media people (Greta Van Susteren is a notable example) ask “Have you read he health law?” I can save you that wasted time as well. There is no need to read the 1,000 page proposal.
Obamacare can be reduced to one word: euthanasia.
Now Obama & Co. obviously don’t call Obamacare euthanasia. That would have his Roman Catholic supporters up in arms. It would have almost all of the American people up in arms.
Let me explain. Lawyers and doctors operate on the same wave length. They take simple matters and use complex jargon to obscure what they are doing. Obama is using this approach with Obamacare. That’s why the proposed Obamacare law is over 1,000 pages, and there are several proposals totaling thousands of pages.
Obama talks about “best methods” and other approaches to “improving” health care. Well this approach has already been tried in Britain. The British approach: let old people and sick people die. “The Queens Euthanasia. Cheerio.”
When I was a young Fighting Illini football player, I could take a hit and get back up and run another play. We “ran the stadium steps” for punishment. But we ran them. Today if someone tackled me I would probably be down. I would not be ready to run another play.
Part of being human is getting older (fortunately, like the late comedian Jack Benny, I have decided to be a perpetual 39).
So as we age, we require more health care. There is no way we can avoid that. With an aging population, more people will need more health carte.
Obama says he can deliver more “quality” at a “lower price.” Has anyone ever achieved that goal. Of course not. the Obamacare promise is pure bunkum.
So don't waste your time listening to Obama, or reading the goofy bills circulating in Congress. Just remember one word: euthanasia.
My mother is also 39, although she has been that age for decades. (I started asking her age when I was about 5.)She is part of the “old old,” or over 85. She needs doctors’ care and medicines. Overall, these drugs and health care have performed a miracle. She enjoys good health for a person her age.
But by slowing constricting the care and quality of medicine available to older and old old people, Obama would be killing my mother on the installment plan. “Best" would no longer be the "best" for her, because Obama would say she is too old for the "best" care. She would get “cost effective” care.
In short, Obama wants to kill my mother. And he wants to kill your moms too.
Finally, he wants to kill all of us, again on the installment plan.
Quality care costs money. Democrats lie to the people (or at least that portion of the American people dumb enough to believe you can get something for nothing). Someone has to pay.
The current medical system is a mess. No one can deny that. We could make changes to save billions. But Obama doesn’t wasn’t to make changes to save money. He wants to take over the health care industry and provide socialized medicine to everyone. Obama wants to grab control of 17% of the nation's economy and proclaim politicians "czars" of medicine.
I have lived in Britain and seen what socialized medicine is like. You won’t like it. Britain has some world class doctors. But you have to wait months to see them. Try telling a Chicagoan or New Yorker they have to wait months to see a doctor. I can usually see a physician in a day or two.
Today health care may be a problem, but is a local problem. Local people control hospitals; local doctors work there, our friends and neighbors. Sooner or later, local people can influence their local institutions.
Obama wants to federalize health care, so that federal bureaucrats at the end of toll-free lines would be in control. Local control of doctors and hospitals would be a memory.
As a U. S. Senator I will do everything we can to save money on health care. But I can promise that I will NOT support: selling bonds and running up trillion-dollar deficits to steal from peoples’ grandchildren.
If we do not stop believing in the “something for nothing” promises politicians love to make, we are going to be broke as a nation. Chinese takeout, anyone? The great American Ponzi scheme is going to collapse
Obamacare is yet another Ponzi scheme. “More for less?” Where do I sign up? Only a moron would believe you can get more for less simply by computerizing your records. Anyone tried to deal with a computerized credit card company or mortgage lender recently?
Bottom line: Obama care = euthanasia. Obama wants to kill us slowly, by making America a third world country when it comes to medical care. He wants to kill our parents first, and then kill us later, by denying treatment and coverage in the name of the “best and least expensive approach”
Barry Obama: LEAVE MY MOTHER ALONE! She is doing fine and she has good health care. She doesn’t need your garbage can plan to gradually cut off her medical care.
