Forty-eight hours that changed American politics
Mainstream media collapse in disarray as conservative Republicans rally to Andy Martin
Dear Illinois Republican:
Several weeks ago I began announcing “D-Day” for December 28th. I said we would launch game-changing attacks. I am a man of my word.
On Sunday (December 27) my campaign issued a statement claiming we were going to turn Illinois politics upside down. We were wrong. We are turning American politics upside down!
Simply by telling voters the truth about my opponent.
I am just a straightforward hard-charging Fighting Illini. Everything I learned in life I learned in Memorial Stadium. As a freshman, Coach Ray Eliot regaled me with the upset Fighting Illini victory that was led by the cry “Send Ameche at me.” I have this to say to the liberal media: Send Kirk at me. We’ll beat him.
The media began with their typical malicious attacks on me. Lies, distortions. Not one positive word about someone who has been a successful corruption fighter. Just bald-faced efforts to smear me (see www.AndyMartin.com for my bio.) Just ask Sarah Palin what these people are like.
The “hate parade” was led by Nell Steinberg, a Sun-Times "columnist" who accused all downstaters of being ignoramuses. You should know, in the same spirit of full disclosure that media apply to me, that Mr. Steinberg was criminally charged with beating his wife and being a drunk, and entered rehab. I think Steinberg needs to stay in rehab. To protect his wife. My victory on February 2nd will keep Steinberg in rehab.
Gay media across the country have declared Mark Kirk a homosexual. In fact, one gay publication (San Diego) is suggesting Kirk’s campaign is collapsing the same way Tiger Woods did.
Carol Marin of NBC-TV is afraid “the wrong people will be voting.” That means YOU. In other words, not “her people.” Liberals.
Now conservative publications are rallying to my campaign and comparing my honesty with Mark Kirk’s lifetime of duplicity, deceit and deception (D-Day?). See http://rffm.typepad.com/. Even political opponents who are supporting other candidates are collapsing their opposition and admitting my radio advertising about Kirk is 100% true. One of the people mentioned in the ad, Ray True, calls me the “ultra” conservative in the race. Now he tells us.
The media thought their lies would finish me off. Once again, they were wrong. I see a tsunami of conservative support flowing in our direction. The momentum has shifted to my campaign. Victory is in sight.
If conservatives stick together and join my campaign, we will defeat Kirk and claim the nomination as ours. It has to be a team effort. On February 2nd we can celebrate a national victory for conservatives. Take that Barry Obama.
The media are running scared. They were caught lying to you about Kirk. What else are they lying about? Me, for example. For months the media lied to you and tried to get you to believe you had no choice in the primary. Now, thanks to my ads, you know the truth. We exploded Kirks balloon in 48 Hours. 48 Hours that changed American politics.
Tell voters the truth, and the mainstream media panic. Now you know why the Chicago Tribune once called me an “absolutely brilliant campaigner” and a “master” campaigner.
And, by the way watch for an even bigger “Bunker Buster” ad next January 6th. Kirk is toast.

Dear Senator DeMint:
On October 16th I sent you a letter outlining the respective qualifications of Patrick Hughes and myself. A week later you issued an incomplete and misleading newsletter (November 21, 2009) claiming no one but Hughes had asked for your support.
One of the problems with Beltway “conservatives” is that they act very “liberal” with the truth. If you are going to try to rig an endorsement, please don’t try to mislead your nationwide supporters with half-truths and incomplete information.
First, since you have not responded to my letter, you are apparently not meeting with other candidates. How can you make an informed, intelligent decision without knowing all of the options?
Second, in your “newsletter” you state Hughes’ “issues” as though the man has discovered something. All of the Republican Party primary candidates with the exception of Mark Kirk support the same issues (actually, even Kirk belatedly claims to support them). Hughes’ “issues” are nothing more than a list of talking points that he recites as a parrot. If everyone supports the same issues, “issues” are not a basis to highlight one candidate over another.
Mr. Hughes has a serious problem with the truth. He lied about his support by Mike Ditka, he lied about his financial “commitments,” he lied about his record as an attorney and he has sought to proceed by surreptitiously filing challenges against other candidates. Mr. Kirk is a liar. But why would you back another liar to oppose him? Why not back the truth?
Hughes claims to be a “real estate developer.” The only major project identified with him never put a shovel in the ground and triggered litigation. He claimed to act as a “general counsel” for a de facto bankrupt real estate firm at a time when he had voluntarily suspended his law license. Are these the kinds of fraudulent acts and issues you want to endorse in a primary?
Hughes may have remodeled a few kitchens and baths, and sold “fixer-uppers” at a profit. That does not make him a “real estate developer.” Have you actually reviewed and evaluated a project list of Hughes’ developments? Of course not. That list doesn’t exist.
Mr. Hughes never voted in a Republican primary before 2008. He has issued responses that argue he has voted copiously, but no one has ever seen any backup for his claims. Have you? If he can’t document his voting record for local Republicans, why would you support him?
Hughes is a forty year-old man with a blank slate when it comes to public involvement. He claims that earlier this year he had a vision he should be a senator, paid a few thousand dollars to set up an anti-tax committee, and overnight became a national figure. I don’t think so. Most candidates who have no public and no political experience turn out to be disasters. There may be exceptions to the rule, but the rule is that “no public experience, no political experience,” equals no experience for statewide office. Hughes is no exception.
Oh, I forgot to mention: Hughes has issued bogus polls. He wins his own polls, naturally. But Hughes leaves my name out of his polls. I wonder why? Maybe because both Kirk and Hughes are afraid to list my name in their polls. I beat both of them. Is your PAC staff so gullible that they believe bogus polls?
The Illinois primary is the first election of the 2010 cycle. If you back a loser in that race your “brand” is going to be both tarnished and embarrassed. Don’t get too full of yourself.
Have you asked Hughes if he has a media plan? (My own campaign announced last Saturday that this week we are beginning media production.)
I have over forty years of political experience, so please allow me to give you some advice. Hughes is a loser. He is being promoted by someone (D. Paul Caprio) who uses politics to plunder the process for his own financial gain. So be careful. I assume Hughes got to you through Tom Coburn, who in turn is linked to Caprio. Coburn needs to have his head examined for hanging around a sleaze ball like Caprio.
Ironically, one of Hughes major supporters, Jack Roeser, made it a condition of his support that Caprio be removed from the Hughes campaign. Caprio still slithers around, but he has no official role in deference to Roeser’s demand. Call and ask Jack Roeser what he thinks of Caprio & Co. It might be an eye-opener.
ABC Channel 7 is scheduling a candidates’ debate. I suggest you hold up support for any candidate until you see them perform on the Channel 7 debate early in January. If after seeing him go up against Kirk and me, you still like Hughes, be my guest. Have at it and support him. My guess is you will not be happy with Hughes’ performance and will be glad you took my advice.
The American people are enraged and outraged that Barack Obama sits in the White House. I am the only candidate with a record of standing up to Obama. People want someone in office they can trust to fight the Obama agenda. With no experience and no record of standing up for anything but his own self-interest, only a fool would take Pat Hughes seriously. What does that say about your staff?
I don’t like Mark Kirk’s record and believe he can and should be defeated. But you are backing a dead horse if you are trying to send a rookie like Hughes up against pros like Kirk or me. Be real.

I would like to ask for your support, and also suggest why one of my primary opponents should not receive your support.
I.
PATRICK HUGHES
One of my primary opponents, Patrick Hughes, has been running around for the past couple of months saying he is a “conservative:”
FACT: Hughes never voted in a Republican primary until last year (2008). He has only voted a handful of times in his entire life, says he was "too busy to vote." Other than parroting a list of talking points he has no conservative record.
FACT: Earlier this year, Hughes created an anti-tax “committee” that he claims is the sole basis of his experience to seek statewide office. The Committee has no track record to speak of. Try and contact Hughes' “committee.”
Fact: Hughes said on August 20th he had “$400,000” in “commitments.” These “commitments” vanished by September 30th when he produced $130,000 in contributions.
FACT: Hughes claimed he had the support of Mike Ditka, who then denied that fact, and then reversed himself again. Ditka has kept his distance from Hughes since the fracas. Hughes claimed Ditka was on his “finance committee,” which Ditka denied and has never revoked.
FACT: Hughes asked the two African-American candidates in the senate primary to withdraw, thereby casting a racist tint on his candidacy. Nice “image” for a novice Republican to project.
FACT: Hughes lacked the petition signatures to file for the senate primary, and was forced to file on the last day because he didn’t have the necessary signatures. Hughes tried to paper over this failure by claiming he was “trying to file last, for last place on the ballot,” but ended up not filing last. Hughes is now trying to have the people who filed after him thrown off the ballot. He is a laugh-a-minute.
FACT: Your committee is apparently conducting some sort of poll this week. Hughes is asking his supporters to rig the poll in his favor.
FACT: Hughes has used fraudulent campaign tactics. He hired a “consultant” to organize an endorsement, but the consultant failed to tell the people he was soliciting that he had been paid by Hughes to do so. Another black eye for Hughes. On and on it goes.
FACT: Hughes has never before run for any office and he is a totally inexperienced candidate. He is not a “natural” candidate. There is no way he will come up to speed in the remaining seventy-five days of the campaign.
How can anyone on your staff seriously consider endorsing such a clown?

ANDY MARTIN
There are a number of reasons why you might not want to support me, and there is only one reason why you might back my candidacy: I can defeat Mark Kirk.
That’s all that counts. If I take Kirk down on February 2nd, we will launch a conservative revolution. Join the A-Team.
FACT: Earlier today I lunched with a key media representative in Chicago. He was astounded by the brilliancy and boldness of my campaign strategy against Kirk, and will quietly assist. I actually have a media plan in effect to topple Kirk. All we need is the cash to rip him apart. No other primary candidate else even knows how to approach media. Ask to see Hughes’ media plan.
FACT: I have over forty years of experience in radio and TV. Later this month we are launching a movie on Barack Obama, “Obama: The Hawai’i Years.” If you want to see a rough cut, just ask and we will let you see what it will look like.
FACT: My appearance on Hannity’s America in 2008 became one of the defining moments of the 2008 presidential campaign. The hard left is still fuming over me. Obama was concerned that my media activity was costing him millions of votes. Obama sent Robert Gibbs on national TV to attack me by name, and trumped up negative front-page coverage in the New York Times. I am as tough a campaigner as they come. I do not need a crash course in how to campaign or how to defend myself. I threw Obama’s mud right back at him. If John McCain had run a minimally competent campaign, he could have won.
FACT: Mark Kirk is a savvy and slippery opponent. The leftover political rumdums behind Hughes have no idea how to bring him down. No one else in Illinois politics has the means or the guts to take on Kirk and drop him the way I do. Period.
FACT: I am controversial. My opponents love to use 25 year-old and 35 year—old court cases to attack me. Obama and/or Kirk have flooded the Internet with attack videos. If I am so inconsequential, why is someone doing so much and working so hard to try to stop me? Obviously, “someone” knows I am the real threat to Obama/Kirk. I have the “ultimate endorsement:” I am Obama’s worst nightmare in his former senate seat.
FACT: I have over forty years of political experience. I helped send crooked Illinois politicians to jail (www.AndyMartin.com). I have made a lot (a lot) of enemies, and I earned very one of them. But you of all people know that “enemies” can be used to advantage. In 2010 the public mood demands a reform candidate with an authentic anti-corruption record, not a sheet of talking points. I have that background. I worked in the senate for U. S. Senator Paul Douglas.
FACT: I lived in Baghdad part of 2003 and was a critic of the invasion. I was Paul Bremer’s first critic. Go on the Internet and see for yourself. I know the truth about Kirk’s “military record.” I have actually been in the places Kirk claims to have been. I am not sure Hughes has wandered much beyond the local Dairy Queen. Hughes is totally lacking in credentials.
To support Hughes is to make Kirk look good by comparison. In 2004, Illinois Republicans brought in an outside clown to run against Barack Obama. The clown made Obama look good by comparison. If you support Hughes you will be making Kirk look good. Watch out for the “Obama effect.” It’s real.
FACT: You and I will disagree on some issues. So what? We disagree on Gitmo. That’s good. I think for myself. Hughes gets up and reads of a sheet of “conservative” talking points. He has no ideas and no experience to present to the public. As a senator, you know that we don’t have to agree on everything to work together to defeat a common foe: Kirk.
I think I can convince you in a 15-minute meeting that I am your man. You will take some heat for supporting me, or even leaning in my direction. But if the cash flows, a public endorsement is unnecessary. Just send money and watch us take Kirk apart.
Unlike Hughes, I have done my negative research, and I have a suitcase full of anti-Kirk material to use. Hughes has nothing. Sadly, given all of his peregrinations, Hughes doesn’t even have a campaign.
I am available next week to meet with you in Washington. I can hop on a plane and be there Monday or Tuesday. I don’t know when the senate adjourns and you leave for South Carolina.
Just say the word and I’ll be there. I think you will agree after a 15-minute meeting: I am your man.

FACT: Earlier today I lunched with a key media representative in Chicago. He was astounded by the brilliancy and boldness of my campaign strategy against Kirk, and will quietly assist. I actually have a media plan in effect to topple Kirk. All we need is the cash to rip him apart. No other primary candidate else even knows how to approach media. Ask to see Hughes’ media plan.
FACT: I have over forty years of experience in radio and TV. Later this month we are launching a movie on Barack Obama, “Obama: The Hawai’i Years.” If you want to see a rough cut, just ask and we will let you see what it will look like.
FACT: My appearance on Hannity’s America in 2008 became one of the defining moments of the 2008 presidential campaign. The hard left is still fuming over me. Obama was concerned that my media activity was costing him millions of votes. Obama sent Robert Gibbs on national TV to attack me by name, and trumped up negative front-page coverage in the New York Times. I am as tough a campaigner as they come. I do not need a crash course in how to campaign or how to defend myself. I threw Obama’s mud right back at him. If John McCain had run a minimally competent campaign, he could have won.
FACT: Mark Kirk is a savvy and slippery opponent. The leftover political rumdums behind Hughes have no idea how to bring him down. No one else in Illinois politics has the means or the guts to take on Kirk and drop him the way I do. Period.
FACT: I am controversial. My opponents love to use 25 year-old and 35 year—old court cases to attack me. Obama and/or Kirk have flooded the Internet with attack videos. If I am so inconsequential, why is someone doing so much and working so hard to try to stop me? Obviously, “someone” knows I am the real threat to Obama/Kirk. I have the “ultimate endorsement:” I am Obama’s worst nightmare in his former senate seat.
FACT: I have over forty years of political experience. I helped send crooked Illinois politicians to jail (www.AndyMartin.com). I have made a lot (a lot) of enemies, and I earned very one of them. But you of all people know that “enemies” can be used to advantage. In 2010 the public mood demands a reform candidate with an authentic anti-corruption record, not a sheet of talking points. I have that background. I worked in the senate for U. S. Senator Paul Douglas.
FACT: I lived in Baghdad part of 2003 and was a critic of the invasion. I was Paul Bremer’s first critic. Go on the Internet and see for yourself. I know the truth about Kirk’s “military record.” I have actually been in the places Kirk claims to have been. I am not sure Hughes has wandered much beyond the local Dairy Queen. Hughes is totally lacking in credentials.
To support Hughes is to make Kirk look good by comparison. In 2004, Illinois Republicans brought in an outside clown to run against Barack Obama. The clown made Obama look good by comparison. If you support Hughes you will be making Kirk look good. Watch out for the “Obama effect.” It’s real.
FACT: You and I will disagree on some issues. So what? We disagree on Gitmo. That’s good. I think for myself. Hughes gets up and reads of a sheet of “conservative” talking points. He has no ideas and no experience to present to the public. As a senator, you know that we don’t have to agree on everything to work together to defeat a common foe: Kirk.
I think I can convince you in a 15-minute meeting that I am your man. You will take some heat for supporting me, or even leaning in my direction. But if the cash flows, a public endorsement is unnecessary. Just send money and watch us take Kirk apart.
Unlike Hughes, I have done my negative research, and I have a suitcase full of anti-Kirk material to use. Hughes has nothing. Sadly, given all of his peregrinations, Hughes doesn’t even have a campaign.
I am available next week to meet with you in Washington. I can hop on a plane and be there Monday or Tuesday. I don’t know when the senate adjourns and you leave for South Carolina.
Just say the word and I’ll be there. I think you will agree after a 15-minute meeting: I am your man.
